Tucked away on the remote northeastern coast of Islay, accessible only by a single-track road winding along the Sound of Islay, Bunnahabhain—pronounced “Boo-na-ha-venn” and meaning “mouth of the river” in Gaelic has been quietly producing whisky since 1881, when the Islay Distillery Company carved a distillery, a pier, and an entire workers’ village out of previously uninhabited coastline. For much of its history it supplied the lion’s share of its spirit to the Famous Grouse and Black Bottle blends, meaning precious little made it into bottle under its own name — which is precisely what makes this event so special. Independent bottlers have long known what the blending houses knew: Bunnahabhain’s unpeated, maritime character—rich with hazelnuts, dried fruit, sherry-soaked oak, and saline coastal air—is something extraordinary when given time and the right cask.
