SUMMARY:Tour de Écosse - the 3 styles
DESCRIPTION:Pop-over for our Pop-up!  I’ve selected three pairs of complementary whiskies in three different styles for our tasting. We’ll begin with Glen Grant (Speyside) Major’s Reserve\, a prototypical aperitif-style dram.  Macleod’s Highland Regional Single Malt (from its Glengoyne distillery) is my favorite bargain dram at $40. Bladnoch Samsara (11-yr) is a double-distilled Lowlander and Glen Garioch Founder’s Reserve Highlander are\, surprisingly\, of a similar astringent whisky style.  We’ll finish up with Talisker (Islands) and Ardbeg (Islay) for a big finish.  Storm is a bold 45.8% ABV maritime malt whereas our Drum is a Committee Release at 52% ABV (finished in a rum cask called a ‘drum’ aka machine or dump puncheon (500L/132USG) made of thick toasted American oak staves.)  We hope to see you at Maxwell’s Cigar Bar in Woodstock… and do bring a friend as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.”WHISKY MENU:  6 Single Malts: 1 Lowlands\, 2 Highlands\, 1 Speyside\, I Islands & 1 Islay\n\nGLEN GRANT Single Malt / The Major’s Reserve / NAS / 40% ABV / OB / Dist Owner: Gruppo Campari (Davide Campari-Milano S.p.A.) / Speyside (Rothes)\nMacLEOD’s Single Malt Scotch Whisky / ‘Highland’ / NAS / 43% ABV / IB: Glengoyne Dist / Dist Owner: IMD / Brand Owner: Ian Macleod and Co. Ltd. (Peter J. Russell & Co.) / Highland (Southern)\nBLADNOCH Single Malt / ‘Samsara’ (Bourbon & CA Red Wine Casks) / NAS (11+ yr) / 46.7% ABV / NCF / OB / Dist Owner: Bladnoch Distillery Ltd. (David Prior) / Lowland (Scottish Borders)\nGLEN GARIOCH Single Malt / ‘1797 Founder’s Reserve’ / NAS / 48% ABV / NCF / OB / Dist Owner: Beam Suntory UK Ltd. (Suntory Holdings Ltd.) / Highland (Eastern)\nTALISKER Single Malt / ‘Storm’ / NAS / 45.8% ABV / NCF / OB / Dist Owner: Diageo Scotland Ltd. SUMMARY:Quest for Whisky with Ed Kohl
DESCRIPTION:Dare to Dram? Our lineup is most promising as the six expressions match up nicely. Heart of Speyside from BenRiach’s is a fine aperitif dram! Glenlivet’s Triple Cask Matured is next. It’s aged in a combo of bourbon\, sherry and refill casks. GlenAllachie 12 is matured in a mixture of virgin oak\, Oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and is awesome. Yes\, we have been holding out on you: Amrut Naarangi is da bomb. Wolfburn’s Langskip is matured  exclusively in first-fill bourbon casks and is bottled at a generous 58% ABV\, making it a particularly powerfully flavorsome dram. \nAnd\, for a big close\, the Port Askaig: 110-Proof. Hailing from Caol Ila\, possibly the greatest and definitely the largest of Islay’s 9 active distilleries\, PA-110 is bottled at an attention gathering 55% ABV.  We hope that you are able to join us and bring a friend. DESCRIPTION:“Think rum\, think Caribbean\, think 90-degrees”  Rum is a spirit that’s distilled either from fermented molasses (a by-product from sugar refining making) or freshly-pressed sugar cane juice.  Because of its base material\, molasses-based rums generally have a sweet note and flavors of molasses\, banana and tropical fruit (their complexity is ramped up by aging them in barrels)\, while those made with sugar cane juice (like rhum agricole and Cachaça) have pronounced grassy and vegetal notes.  Rum is made in sugar cane producing countries\, especially those in the Caribbean.  Very aged versions are generally sipped neat\, while unaged and lesser aged spirits are mixed in classic Tiki and modern cocktails. \nPlantation owners first discovered that molasses fermented into alcohol. Later\, distillation of the alcoholic brew concentrated the alcohol and removed impurities\, producing the first true rums. Tradition suggests that rum first originated on the island of Barbados. As it’s a delightful flight\, do please join us and bring a friend as “good whisky (and RUM) is made great when shared among friends.”

SUMMARY:Breaking Out the Good Stuff
DESCRIPTION:“After 10-days\, it’s time for a Break” So\, we’re breaking out the good\nstuff: 6 single malts and lots of comfort food. \nGlen Moray Sherry Cask Finish (Speyside) is the key malt in two of the top ten best-selling Blended Scotches: Label 5 and Sir Edwards. With its capacity of 6-Mlpa (and plans to increase it to 9-Mlpa)\, its owner is now making a big effort in the US Single Malt Scotch market. That translates into attractive (low) pricing for us. \nGlen Ord 15 (Highland) is awesome stuff. It’s available at three places:\nJapan\, Taiwan and Glen Ord’s shop (the origin of our bottle). \nGlen Fohdry 12 (Speyside) is actually Kininvie Distillery 12\, something you seldom see in our market. \nGlenDronach 18 ‘Allardice’ is da bomb! If you’ve not tried it\, you’re in for a real treat! \nI bought our bottle of Aultmore 2011 vintage at the quarterly SMWSA tasting in Roswell. It’s a cask strength single cask at 67.5% ABV (135-proof) and just a great dram. \nCaol Ila 12 is expensive at $80\, but there’s a reason that I keep buying it: it is so well-made and complex that I call it the ‘thinking person’s dram’. Its package and label are way out-of-date and unattractive\, but it is one of my favorite peated dram. \nAs it’s a delightful flight\, do please join us and bring a friend as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.”

SUMMARY:Whisky Season Has Arrived!
DESCRIPTION:November: Whisky Season Has Arrived! \nIt’s likely that you haven’t recently tasted Fettercairn\, Glen Ord or GlenAllachie. So\, let’s have those 3 and add BenRiach\, Balblair and Laphroaig of which you may already be a fan. BenRiach makes excellent all-rounder and digestif style whiskies\, but did you know that its Heart of Speyside is one of the best aperitif style whiskies? I buy every bottle of Fettercairn that I come across\, so I jumped at its new PX sherry bottling\, a 12YO available at Global Travel Retail (Duty-Free). \nNext\, Balblair 18YO is my favorite from the distillery’s new 12\, 15\, 18 & 25-year core range. It is a bright 46% ABV single malt headed to stardom. Singleton of Glen Ord is another hard-to-get-around-here favorite. We’re going to try the 2019 Distillery Exclusive bottling of 48% ABV malt initially matured in ex-bourbon casks before a 18-24 month finishing stint in PX sherry butts… yum! Then\, let’s try a dram of uncut GlenAllachie 7YO at 55% ABV from Duncan Taylor’s Battlehill range. It’s difficult to pronoun ‘Cairdeas’ (it’s in the neighborhood of Car-Chass and Car-Geous)\, but give it a go as Cairdeas is Laphroaig’s best dram… especially the 2018 edition from Fino sherry casks! \nIn sum\, it’s a most promising whisky flight! Do come hungry\, as we will have lots of good food\, too. Invite your friends as ‘good whisky is made great when shared among friends’. See you!

SUMMARY:Distillery Loot! The MASC 2019 Tour
DESCRIPTION:“Whiskies from Distilleries visited during MASC’s 2019 Tour” \nOn 9/15/19 (Saturday)\, MASC toured Glen Moray Distillery in Elgin\, Scotland. We will begin with its Elgin Classic ex-bourbon barrel matured single malt which was bottled at 40% ABV. \nOn 9/9/19 (Monday)\, we dropped by Loch Lomond Distillery to pick-up a bottle of its 2018 Open Championship single malt which includes 3 component spirits fermented with wine yeast. \nWe are excited to tour Teaninich Distillery on 9/11/19 (Wednesday). Let’s taste its 12-Year\, as bottled by G&M. \nWe had the pleasure to visit our friend John MacDonald at Balblair Distillery also on 9//1/19. We will try is 2005 Vintage (13-year) at 46% ABV. \nAfter a 2-hr ferry ride to Islay\, we toured Ardbeg Distillery on 9/10/19 (Tuesday). As ‘An Oa’ has been added to Ardbeg’s core range\, we will taste that 46.6% ABV expression. \nWhile on Islay on 9/10/19\, our returning tourists voted to visit Andrew Brown’s Bunnahabhain Distillery for the second year in a row. We will conclude our tasting with a cask strength dram bottled by Battlehill. \nIt’s a grand flight to honor 6 great distilleries from our tour\, so do join us with your friends as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.”

SUMMARY:Scotland Bound!
DESCRIPTION:Scotland Bound\, Scotland Bound\, I Wish Y’all Were Also Scotland Bound”……\n(I hope to avoid Gordon Lightfoot litigation for use of “Alberta Bound” lyrics): \nThe best way to prepare for a sennight in bonnie Scotland is to partake in some fine malts prior to boarding. Loch Lomond has just released Original\, a retromalt from the prior century. Balblair (Martha’s fav) is an awesome malt from the northern Highlands; let’s taste its 2005 vintage (13-yr) at 46%. From the good folks W&M\, Fettercairn (my fav) 1997 vintage (19-yr) via Murray-McDavid. Let’s try the first bottling of Kilkerran (9-yr from Sherry Casks) that told the world that it would be a cracker single malt. It wasn’t promising at 3 to 8 years and then at 9 … wow… it was brilliant! From the sub-continent\, we will taste Amrut Cask Strength (non-peated). When did you last have a dram of the great Ledaig single malt from the Isle of Mull? For good reason\, it’s the jewel of the Hebrides’… as it is where the famed Smokehead hails. Yes\, a fine flight of whisky is offered. \nPlease do come along and invite your friends as ‘good whisky is made\ngreat when shared among friends’. We’ll have lots of good food to go with it.

SUMMARY:New to the Market!
DESCRIPTION:Three NEW-TO-MARKET SINGLE MALTS: Glenburgie 15\, Armorik Classic NAS & Balmenach 10. We will begin with Glenburgie 15-year from the new Ballentine’s Single Malt range. \nFor second whisky (the ‘tweener)\, Balblair 10-year\, a beauty of an indie bottling from G&M. Highland Queen Majesty is available at Total Wine. Some of the bloggers are sure that it is Glenmorangie\, but we’re not buying that story. In any event\, it’s a grand buy at $46 for a 15-year and 46% ABV Highland malt! Armorik Double Maturation was recently licensed in GA; Atlanta Beverage Co. has 3 expressions in stock. \nWe really enjoy this single malt. Another great buy at Total Wine: Bunnahabhain 6-yr: a delicious cask-strength\, heavily-peated beast from Battlehill/Duncan Taylor & Co. (Huntly\, Aberdeenshire\, SCO). Come and see; this whisky’s amazing! (Did you know that each clan had a rally-point (infantry term) (Battlehill) where they assembled prior to combat?) Our last dram is also a stunner which was purchased from the Scotch Malt Whisky Association: Balmenach cask-strength 10-yr bottled at 57.4% ABV. \nCome hungry: we will have lots of good food. You’re invited to bring a friend as ‘good whiskey is made great when shared among friends’. See you!

SUMMARY:Scotch for Summer
DESCRIPTION:Scotch for Summer! \nAfter a protracted search\, two of our illustrious members found 4 bottles of Glen Grant The Major’s Reserve. It is a wonderful aperitif and\, incidentally\, a fine dram to enjoy during the summer. I can’t understand why Glen Grant malt\ncontinues to be only #10 in worldwide Scotch single malt sales. I bought two bottles from an estate sale: Glenfarclas 17 and BenRiach 10. As both were bottled in 2000- 2002 and thus distilled in 1983-1985 and 1990-1992\, respectively. It will be interesting to see if they taste like the corresponding contemporary bottlings. Samsara is a new NAS expression from the now producing\, rebuilt in place and expanded Bladnoch distillery. \nIan MacMillan\, the legend who created this whisky sent me 100ml samples of all three of its current releases from the whisky inventories that were purchased with the recent sale. Ian told me that the Samsara is actually 11 years old. Cotswolds is the best thing to come out of England since Brian Close\, CBE (1931-2015) and that is saying it’s something very special. We will raise a double dram of Cotswolds Founder’s Choice 60.3% ABV in a toast to England’s greatest ever cricketer. Laphroaig Four Oak is the legendary Simon Brooking’s favorite from Laphroaig’s Global Travel Retail (aka Duty-Free) offerings. \nCome hungry: we will have lots of good food. You’re invited to bring a friend as ‘good whiskey is made great when shared among friends’. I hope to see you! \n-Jack \n

SUMMARY:BenRiach Launch Party Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:“Sure\, you’ve been invited to lunch… but have you ever been invited to launch?” \nNASA-Atlanta: we have a ‘go’ for launch!  There’s no better way to introduce 4 new BenRiach expressions to the Georgia market than (drum roll followed by the Churchill Downs ‘call to the post’ trumpet riff)… by having a LAUNCH PARTY!  And it isn’t difficult.  It’s just a question of gathering a bunch of whisky aficionados and sharing 6 drams of fine BenRiach single malt (including 4 brand new ones) and lots of good food at the attractive cost of only $30.  Location/Parking?  Landmark Diner (Buckhead) affords 92 parking spaces at the intersection of Roswell and Piedmont roads.  As this event is limited to 40 lucky ticket purchasers (and a few Brown-Forman and Empire Distributors folks)\, it’s wise to buy your tickets online now. \n\n—-Purchase Here—-\n\n\n\n—-Purchase Here—-

SUMMARY:The Flight of the Light Brigade
DESCRIPTION:“Forward\, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!” (A reference to Captain Fraser\, the founder of Brackla Distillery who was a career soldier\, a battlefield-commissioned officer and quiet a character\, and Major James Grant\, the founder of Glen Grant\, who was both a legendary distillery manager and highly-decorated combat commander.)\nLet’s begin with Glen Grant Major’s Reserve. Grangestone 18-year-old Highland SM (a Total Wine brand) is aged in sherry casks. Our Royal Brackla is a 12-year by Ainsley Brae (a Total Wine brand); it’s aged in a combo of bourbon and sherry casks. Cotswolds is a terrific 46% ABV malt aged in first-fill Jim Beam barrels. I hand-filled our Highland Park bottle at the distillery in 2018; a 15 yr. at 60.3% aged in a first-fill sherry puncheon. I’m keen on Laphroaig Quarter Cask\, It’s a 48% beauty aged in JB/MM bourbon barrels (first-fill) and then finished in small Quarter casks (125-L) for 7-8 months.\nWhat a whisky flight! So\, do please join us for a fun (and delicious) whisky tasting at Landmark Diner. Be sure to invite a friend\, as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.”

SUMMARY:The Ides of March
DESCRIPTION:The Ides of March \nWhy not celebrate early? The theme of this flight is triplets as I’ve selected 3 pairs of similar whiskies that should be good (and tasty) matches. Glen Moray sherry cask finish and Tomatin (it rhymes with ‘satin’) Dualchas are light\, complex and delicious ‘thinking person’s drams’ with Tomatin featuring a virgin oak finish while Glen Moray is sherry cask finished. \nIn our middle weight pairing\, Penderyn (Wales) is made on the one-of-a-kind Faraday still and finished in Madeira wood while Benromach 15 is made in traditional coal-fired pot stills and aged in a combination of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. In the full-flavored set\, we’ll taste Ardmore 6 (from Duncan-Taylor’s Battlehill range) which is a modestly peated (12-14 ppm) Highlander checking in at a hefty 58% ABV whereas our Caol Ila 8 (from Andrew Symington’s Signatory cask strength range) arises from malted barley peated at 35-38 ppm and a single cask bottled at 59.8% ABV. So\, do please join us for an enjoyable whisky tasting at Landmark Diner. \nPlease remember to invite a friend\, as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.”
