SUMMARY:The Judgement of Westland - Orange County
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at Westland Distillery (Seattle): \n“For centuries Scotland set the standards in single malt whiskey. But today there is a sea change underway. New voices have emerged to challenge the sanctity of tradition in single malt. At Westland we believe that the merits of a single malt should not be determined by where a distillery sits on a map\, but instead be judged by the integrity of its intention and the excellence of its execution. We believe that all fine single malts should be equally considered as valid points in the global conversation that defines them. \nSince 2010\, Westland has been the flag-bearer of America’s contribution to that conversation. Ten years in\, do we measure up? The pundits give us high marks\, but has Westland\, and America\, truly earned a seat at the table? It is not for us to claim; it is for you to decide. \nIt is time for the Judgement of Westland. \nOur goal is similar to that of The Judgement of Paris—a blind tasting hosted by British wine merchant Steven Spurrier in 1976 that American Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon against some of the most famed Bordeaux Chateaux—by demonstrating again that new world can indeed stand tall with old world. \nStarting October 1st\, Westland will be hosting a series of blind tastings across the globe featuring four single malts from four distinct regions. Single malt fans will be asked to score each (not rank) to see how different regions stack up. None other than Dave Broom and Dr. Sam Simmons have selected each whiskey and designed the scoring system.” \nOrange County Scotch Club will be participating in The Judgement of Westland… and then some.  In addition to the blind tasting of 1oz each of an unknown Westland and three other single malts\, we will finish with the flagship Westland\, the not-yet-released  2021 Westland Garryana\, and Westland Distillery Shop Only Cask No. 3859.  That’s a lot of whisky!  Westland’s Marshall Altier will preside over the Judgment. \nLunch will be provided per your choice of Cheeseburger\, Veggie burger\, or chicken quesadilla. \nALL for $25. \nThe event will be held on the OUTSIDE patio. Per COVID concerns\, we will separate into a vaxxed-only section and a “don’t care” section with plenty of space in between. \n  \n

SUMMARY:OCSC - Those Awkward Teenage Years
DESCRIPTION:We’ve done young whiskies. We’ve done mature whiskies. But what about the ones in the middle? Unlike with people\, the teenage years are whisky’s sweetspot: beginning to show the nuances of maturity without being stodgy\, and still (mostly) affordable. We’ve assembled a selection of whiskies from 13 to 19\, to see what these adolescents have to offer. Of course\, these are not just your average liquor store expressions (would we do that to you?): we’ve got a discontinued favorite\, a highly collectible limited edition\, and the Whisky Bible 2014 Whisky of the Year. If we priced this at current market value\, the whisky alone would be nearly $40 (it’s like getting dinner for free). \nCragganmore 2003 SMWS 37.88\nBowmore 2001 14yr. Hepburn’s Choice for K&L\nLaphroaig 15yr. 200th Anniversary Edition\nOld Pulteney 17yr.\nFettercairn 1996 18yr. Signatory\nGlenmorangie Ealanta 1993 19yr. (Private Edition #4) \n$45 Whisky and dinner\n$20 Dinner only \nMenu options:\nHamburger/Cheeseburger/Veggieburger\nBlackened Mahi on Grilled Sourdough\nTurkey Wrap\nClassic Reuben\nWith a choice of Fries\, Coleslaw\, or Fruit. \nWe need to sell a minimum of 25 tickets by the 10th to make this event go\, so please get your RSVPS in early. If we continue our streak of sell-outs\, we’ll got to the vaults for a tasty bonus bottle.\nAs always\, reservations are required- no walk-ins. \nCigars by the fire pit\, after the last pour\, for those inclined.\nWe will be outside\, under the overhang\, heaters available. Come wind\, rain\, sleet\, or snow.

SUMMARY:Island Hopping
DESCRIPTION:  \nContact brett@scotchclub.com for last minute tickets. \nThis month we wrap up our exploration of the Five Whisky Regions with a visit to Scotlands unofficial sixth region. Currently part of the Highland Region\, there are six distilleries scattered over five islands: Orkney\, Skye\, Mull\, Jura\, and Arran; with more in the works (Islay is it’s own thing). There is considerable sentiment among whisky aficionados\, and within the industry\, to create a separate Island Region. Is there such a thing as “Island Character\,” or is an accident of geography/geology being used to push a marketing agenda? Let’s find out. \n$50 Dinner included
