SUMMARY:The Balvenie EPIC event - San Diego
DESCRIPTION:Balvenie in San Diego.  Finally.  One of Scotch Club’s favorites\, and everyone’s favorites\, will be tasted at Liberty Call on Monday\, May 9th.  Being Scotch Club\, we are going to take this to another level.  Everyone should try the Doublewood 12 and Single Barrel 15\, and we will.  Then it gets interesting. \nBalvenie is well known for having some of the most talented brand ambassadors out there.  It’s a tough gig to get.  None other than Neil Strachan\, the west coast ambassador\, will be guiding us through the evening.  Neil has been saving some special in his cupboard for years:  he will share a CASK SAMPLE of Balvenie 2005 Sherry finish whisky at 61.9% AND a 1966/2012 cask sample of Balvenie scotch\, no\, wait\, NOT SCOTCH\, that aged so long it dropped to 36.7%\, below the legal limit.  Of course\, Balvenie fixed that by blending it with other (higher proof) casks to create the famous Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 3. \nThe TUN 1401!  This is one of the best series of whisky Balvenie has ever made.  Sure the 1509 was decent\, but the 1401 was well-sherried and became EPIC\, especially the Batches 3 and 9 in America.  It is easily better than the 30yr.  This was David Stewart’s pet project.  He was given the run of the distillery to do ANYTHING he wanted\, and when you give a genius full support\, good things happen.  My (Andy Smith) personal collection of Tun 1401s is something special to me.  They are worth $1000 now and are probably undervalued.  But SDSC is special to me too\, and I believe you need to try it at least once while mortal (pretty sure this stuff is up in heaven.) \nWe’re just getting started… why not try the nearly sold out Balvenie Doublewood 17 while we are at it.  And let’s see what else is in my closet: it’s a Balvenie Port Wood 21yr; not the $300-$400 bottle version\, mind you\, it is the rare duty free version with a higher ABV. \nBut we do have one more thing: Balvenie 1974 25yr.  This gem from the best year in the history of everything\, landed in my lap a few years ago and I knew this would be its purpose.  Again\, $1000.  Again\, I’m sharing it with you\, my friends. \nEpic night of scotch\, epic night of food.  Bill Rogers of Liberty Call is making a special purchase\, tomahawk chops\, the famously thick steak with two pounds of meat on 18 inches of bone.  Bill will be cutting up the meat so that we will have one pound per person. \nHere is how the night lines up: \nThe Dinner\nTomahawk chops (1 pound of meat per person)\nmashed potatoes demi-gloss and vegetables\n(vegetarian available upon request) \nThe Scotch\nBalvenie 12yr Doublewood  – 1oz\nBalvenie 15yr Single Barrel Sherry – 1oz\nBalvenie 2005 Sherry Finish Cask Sample 61.9% – 1/2oz\nBalvenie 1966 Cask #6424 Sample (Tun 1401 component) – 1/2oz\nBalvenie Port Wood 21yr Duty Free version – 1/2oz\nBalvenie 17yr Doublewood – 1/2oz\nBalvenie Tun 1401 Batch 3 – 1/2oz\nBalvenie 1974 25yr – 1/2oz

SUMMARY:Monthly Tasting – March 2022
DESCRIPTION:http://PayPal.Me/AtlantaScotchClub/50 \nWow! My goal is to move our official monthly tasting to the first Thursday of the month. My means is this flight of delicious single malts. Don’t miss this one! Did you know that Bladnoch\, a fine full-bodied all-rounder\, makes a fine aperitif dram? The good folks at G&M aren’t wasting away in Elgin\, they’re sorting some of the best drams to be had. This 1986 was bottled in 1998 at 11 years-old and 40% ABV. \nMy favorite ‘tweener dram is Kilkerran 12. Made by the masters of Springbank at their Glengyle distillery\, just down the street. I’ll bet that you have not had a Balmenach recently. Why my friends at InverHouse haven’t begun bottling it as a single malt is the great Scottish enigma. I love Teaninich to the point that I buy a bottle upon sight. This single cask/cask strength 2004 jewel was bottled at 54.6% ABV in 2004 (as a 13-year). \nChecking in the from Society is another single cask/cask strength treasure: Blair Athol (home of Bell’s) at 59.1% ABV and 9-years-old based on its 2009 vintage bottling in 2018. Let’s top-off our sojourn with the legendary Black Bowmore (well\, I don’t have that one) Caol Ila 12. No one does it better than the craftsmen (ah\, craftspersons) at the giant Caol Ila distillery. Yes\, they make a lot of it (for the Diageo blends) and the stuff that they bottle is truly top-shelf. \nDo come hungry\, as we will have lots of good food. Invite your friend as good whisky is made great when shared among friends. \nWHISKY \n1 Campbeltown\, 2 Highland\, 1 Islay\, 1 Lowland\, 1 Speyside \n1. It’s a well-balanced Speysider that features first-class casks and the right level of sweetness. From the edge of Scotland’s western coast\, the new Ardnamurchan is the Rookie of the Year. We love its ‘tweener’ style and range of aromas and flavors. \nThe good folks at Adelphi have a winner here! GlenDronach 12 is a sherry-bomb\, it is wonderful stuff! This is a sherried-whisky that is oh so consumer friendly. Nobody pours Auchroisk\, so we got it and will. It’s one of many Diageo distilleries whose output is used for Johnnie Walker and J&B. You’ll love it! \nGlenglassaugh makes fine older sherried malts\, but it also makes a moderately-peated younger dram. So\, let’s give Torfa a try. Our final dram is Waterford Denmore. Its mashbill is 100% malted barley from a single farm. Every week it changes to a different single farm and there’s no shortage as 96 farms have signed up. \nWe hope that you’re able to participate and bring along a friend as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU: \n1. SUMMARY:Bourbon's Up
DESCRIPTION:$40:  Please use this paypal link:  http://www.paypal.me/AtlantaScotchClub/40 \nBourbon’s Up: \nOur menu consists of 4 bourbon and 2 rye whiskeys. A strong candidate for the best ‘value bourbon’ is Jim Beam Black Extra-Aged. At 86-proof\, it’s remarkably rich and tasty. From Stanfordville\, NY\, in the Hudson River Valley\, midway between NYC and Albany\, there’s an outstanding bourbon distillery! Let’s try Taconic Bourbon\, a cognac cask-finished bourbon bottled at 90 proof. Buffalo Trace’s flagship bourbon at 90-proof is next. \nThe good folks at Dad’s Hat (Craft Whiskey of the Year) distill their 90-Proof Pennsylvania aka Monongahela-style rye in Bristol\, just outside of DE. As opposite to the Maryland-style rye\, Monongahela ryes use malted rye rather than malted barley. So\, it’s is a pre-prohibition rye that was once the most popular whiskey in the US. Angel’s Envy Rye is rum cask finished and bottled at 100-proof. \nOur final dram is Rowan’s Creek Bourbon\, a 100.1-proofer from Willett Distillery. I hope you can join us and do bring a friend because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU \n1. SUMMARY:From Scotland with Love
DESCRIPTION:From Scotland With Love (And Ireland With Its Best Regards): \nYes\, it is a busy time and I’ve selected 6 whiskies to tempt you to make an appearance at our 6th of January 2022 tasting event. We haven’t offered a Glen Spey since 2016\, so let’s right that oversight with G&M’s 1995 vintage\, at an apéritif appropriate 43% ABV.  Almost every drop of Glen Spey is used in the J&B Rare Scotch Blend\, so it may be another 5-years till I have a bottle. \nArdnamurchan is an excellent recent release from this modern distillery which is owned by whisky veterans Falconer\, Houston & Bruce. It’s a stunning dram! From Mark Reynier’s Waterford Distillery in Ireland\, we’ll taste Rathclogh 1.1\, an organic single malt bottled at 50% ABV. All of the barley malt was grown at the adjacent Rathclogh farm and malted locally: yummy. \nVinaya is a cracker from the new rock-star of the Lowlands: Bladnoch. It turns out that an Australian millionaire was able to hire away Wm Grant & Son’s top whisky maker under 40-years-old. If you enjoy a happy ending: Vinaya awaits you. \nThe maniacs at SMWS have bottled a 61% ABV Glenlossie and apply named it Tip ‘N Sip. As Glenlossie is typically a gentle blending malt\, this monster will startle you. \nNext\, Malt Advocates’ 2021 Single Malt of the Year: Lagavulin 2021 Offerman Edition 11-year was finished in Guinness casks for 4 months and bottled at 46% sans chill-filtration or coloration. Do come hungry\, as we will have lots of good food. Invite your friends as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY:   2 Speyside\, 1 Highland\, 1 Lowland\, 1 Islay and 1 Irish \n1. SUMMARY:Glen Who?
DESCRIPTION:We took a poll among a bunch of our friends\, and asked one question: “What are the best whisky distilleries no one has ever heard of?” The group included a couple of respected whisky bloggers\, a handful of industry professionals\, and a few very knowledgeable amateurs. We collated their responses and came up with a list “hidden gems.” \nOf course\, since this is the Orange County Scotch Club\, it turns out that some of those gems are not so hidden having made appearances in club tastings in recent years. But we managed to put together a list of malts that we think most of you may not be familiar with.  Let’s check them out. \nAllt-a-Bhainne 22yr. 1993 Exclusive Malts\nDailuaine 10yr. 2010 The Sovereign for K&L\nDufftown 18yr. 1997 Signatory for K&L\nGlenburgie 27yr. 1985 SMWS 71.38\nRoyal Brackla 20yr. 1994 SMWS 55.23\nTamdhu 20yr. 1998 The Old Malt Cask \nThe event will take place in a private room at a restaurant whose personnel are all fully vaccinated. Because there are some at-risk members\, all participants must present their current Covid-19 vaccination card.  If you cannot attend for this reason and still wish to enjoy a few drams\, please contact us for other non-attending options. \nThe number of participants\, including any non-whisky drinkers\, will be strictly limited. If you are planning to bring a plus-one\, let us know with your RSVP. \nYou are responsible for your own dinner tab\, but please order something\, so they’ll keep letting us come back.

SUMMARY:Scottish Tobacco #3
DESCRIPTION:“Two New Arrivals” \nThis tasting will introduce 2 single malts that are recent arrivals in the US.  They came in the right way: At an authorized port of entry\, full-documented and full- vaccinated. \nArdnamurchan AD/03.21:02 is the new Ardnamurchan Distillery’s first release to the US and it is exclusive to the US. The distillery is owned by Adelphi which has been releasing lovely independent bottlings for many years. Bladnoch Vinaya is another 46+ percenter that just entered the US. We just visited Bladnoch and can’t wait to return! This expression has aged in bourbon and sherry first-fill casks. We’ll begin our tasting with Loch Lomond Original. LL is the most under-rated distillery in Scotland\, so it’s high-time to give it its due. GlenDronach 12 is a beautiful thing\, indeed! It’s sherry cask matured to the point of being a Sherry-bomb. Let’s finish big: Bowmore 10 Dark & Intense is a gentle but so tasty dram which we will undo with a go of Ardbeg Wee Beastie\, a 5-year-old riot in a bottle. Let’s help Shafi Hai begin his 25th year at this location as he’s just moved 4 doors down into a larger and freshly remodeled suite. It’s still at the same street address. So\, do join us and bring a friend\, because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends”.\n\nOur Whisky Flight \n1. SUMMARY:The Judgement of Westland - SFSC
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco Scotch Club will be participating in The Judgement of Westland… and then some.  In addition to the blind tasting of 1oz each of an unknown Westland and three other single malts\, we will finish with the flagship Westland\, the not-yet-released  2021 Westland Garryana and the original (and incredibly rare) 2015 Westland Garryana. \nIf that wasn’t enough\, our hosts at Beer Baron Whiskey Bar will be offering a cocktail and light appetizers.  Westland’s own Marshall Altier will preside over the Judgment.  YOU will be the jury. \nFrom our friends at Westland Distillery (Seattle): \n“For centuries Scotland set the standards in single malt whiskey. But today there is a sea change underway. New voices have emerged to challenge the sanctity of tradition in single malt. At Westland we believe that the merits of a single malt should not be determined by where a distillery sits on a map\, but instead be judged by the integrity of its intention and the excellence of its execution. We believe that all fine single malts should be equally considered as valid points in the global conversation that defines them. \nSince 2010\, Westland has been the flag-bearer of America’s contribution to that conversation. Ten years in\, do we measure up? The pundits give us high marks\, but has Westland\, and America\, truly earned a seat at the table? It is not for us to claim; it is for you to decide. \nIt is time for the Judgement of Westland. \nOur goal is similar to that of The Judgement of Paris—a blind tasting hosted by British wine merchant Steven Spurrier in 1976 that American Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon against some of the most famed Bordeaux Chateaux—by demonstrating again that new world can indeed stand tall with old world. \nStarting October 1st\, Westland will be hosting a series of blind tastings across the globe featuring four single malts from four distinct regions. Single malt fans will be asked to score each (not rank) to see how different regions stack up. None other than Dave Broom and Dr. Sam Simmons have selected each whiskey and designed the scoring system.” \n  \n

None other than Dave Broom and Dr. Sam Simmons have selected each whiskey and designed the scoring system.” \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cigars and Scotch at Maxwell's III
DESCRIPTION:-6 Single Malts & Your Cigar Purchases- \nTO CELEBRATE THE FIRST DAY OF OFFICIAL WHISKY SEASON: \nLet’s get it started with Scapa Skiren\, a lovely dram from the Isle of Orkney in the North Sea. In 2012\, Whyte & Mackay replicated the blended malt that Sir Ernest Shackleton took on his 1909 trek to the South Pole. It was so popular that W&M introduced a Shackleton core of bottling in 2014. \nHailing from Wales\, Penderyn is an excellent single malt. We’ll try its best-seller Madeira cask finished.  A favorite dram among the 4 W&M distilleries is Fettercairn. Our expression is a 56% cask strength bottling by Battlehill. Bowmore Dark & Intense is an interesting Duty-Free exclusive bottling aged in a sherry-cask for 10- years. For a big finish\, let’s go with the popular and delicious Lagavulin 16-year. \nWe hope you can join us and do bring a friend because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU: \n1. SUMMARY:Loch Lomond & Glen Scotia Georgia Launch
DESCRIPTION:Launch or Lunch?  Actually\, it’s the official Georgia launch event for the fine Loch Lomond and Glen Scotia single malt ranges. Mr Forbes McMullin\, Vice President of Loch Lomond Group and Brandon Cruz\, State Executive of Blue Ridge Spirits\, will lead our tasting. \nWe will taste 3 Loch Lomond expressions: Original\, 12-Year and the much hyped Royal Portrush from the Open Course range and three Glen Scotia expressions: Double Cask\, 15-Year and the mighty Victoriana. \nIf you are not familiar with Loch Lomond and/or Glen Scotia\, you are in for a very pleasant surprise! I’ve had the pleasure of touring Loch Lomond distillery twice and Glen Scotia nine times. Why? I love to discover and then enjoy the good things being brought forth by Michael Henry and Iain McAlister. \nPlease join us and do bring a friend as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.”
