SUMMARY:Liz’s Lowlander Launch - Bladnoch Single Malt
DESCRIPTION:Liz’s Lowlander Launch – Bladnoch Single Malt: In 2021\, Chuck\, Raj\, and I had the pleasure of visiting the lovely newly-rebuilt BLADNOCH Distillery by the Scottish Borders. Is Bladnoch a good malt? It’s a great dram\, as evidence by my expenditure of $900 for 3 special releases! So\, I’m looking forward to our Bladnoch event. \nLet’s start the evening with Bladnoch Vinaya which was conventionally aged in a combination of bourbon or sherry casks for its full maturation. It was bottled at 46.7% ABV\, non-chill-filtered\, and no coloration added. Samsara is aged for about 11-years (although no age guarantee is recorded on its label) in Bourbon and red wine casks. It’s also 46.7% ABV and NCF. Next up is Alinta\, a peated dram from PX sherry and bourbon casks. This one comes in at 47% ABV and is NCF. \nLiora is Bladnoch’s first core expression at cask strength. After maturation in new oak and bourbon casks\, it was bottled at 52.2% ABV without reduction. We will wind things up with 2 aged statement expressions. The 11-Year was aged exclusively in fresh bourbon barrels of charred American white oak and bottled at 46.7% ABV without filtration or coloration. Its 14- Year was matured in Oloroso sherry casks for its full maturation and then bottled at 46.7% ABV on a NCF and NCA basis\, all being best practices. Do come and bring a good friend to chat with Liz Espy and enjoy the whisky creations of Nick Savage\, Ph.D. (Engr)\, and David Prior\, the owner of Bladnoch Distillery. \nMay I suggest: Don’t miss this one! \nWHISKY MENU: 6 Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whiskies \n1. SUMMARY:A Summer's Swan Song Soiree
DESCRIPTION:As the Scotch calendar lists September-thru-March as the unofficial whisky season\, let’s have a dandy pre-season dramming session. \nWaterford’s The Cuvée is a vatting of 25 of its organic Irish single malts\, each of the expressions was based on the crop of a single farm with each farm’s soil type agroecologically paired with the ideal Irish heirloom barley variety. \nPrichard’s is a top-tier American craft distillery. We will try its American single malt. What’s my favorite 13-Yr single malt? That would be Craigellachie. \nAwesome\, a must have! Suntory Global’s malt master and I were once asked our favorite Beam-Suntory (now Suntory Global) single malt: we both answered Glen Garioch\, thus forsaking Ardmore\, Auchentoshan\, Bowmore and Laphroaig). \nFettercairn is the most disrespected Highland single malt. Let’s work on correcting that injustice. I like Ardbeg and my favorite expression is its Uigeadail\, which is finished in Oloroso casks. \nOur cuisine will be delicious\, so do please join us and bring a friend\, because “Good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU: \n1. WATERFORD Organic Irish Single Malt Whiskey / ‘The Cuvée: Lodestar’ / NAS / 50% ABV / NCF / OB / Dist Owner: Renegade Spirits Ltd. (Reynier et al) / IRE (Co. Waterford) \n2. SUMMARY:March Malt Madness 2024
DESCRIPTION:$52 event + $3.60 tax + $4.39 gratuity = $59.99 Ticket Price \n“March Malty” – A Whisky Tasting Dinner: Now that we’ve successfully survived St. Patrick’s Day\, it’s time for the March Malts. I bet that you haven’t had a wee dram of Strathmill\, Bladnoch\, Edradour\, Raasay\, or SPEY single malt Scotch recently. Well\, here is the solution: \nLet’s taste all 5 of the aforementioned whiskies and the great Ardbeg’s BlaaacK limited edition from 2020. Strathmill is the key malt in the J&B Rare Blend\, Bladnoch Vinaya is from a 50:50 of first-fill bourbon and fresh sherry casks\, Edradour 2002 Vintage 10-Yr is da bomb\, Raasay is the best young single malt from among the last decades new distilleries (except Lochlea): it is stunningly good. \nThe orphaned SPEY (Speyside Distillery allowed its property to be sold to another distiller) makes an excellent malt. Let’s watch for the build-out of their Aviemore distillery.  Ardbeg: enough said\, so let’s taste BlaaacK. \nOur cuisine… all four courses… will be delightful\, so do please join us and bring a friend: “Good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU:\n1. SUMMARY:Leap Year Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:“Leap into March” – A Leap-Year-Day Tasting Dinner \nOur whisky menu is quite promising and our soup/salad/entrée/desert at the new GoodFellas Bar & Grill will be delicious. We will begin our whisky flight with the 1990 vintage Glencadam 20-Year from Gordon & Macphail (1895). \nFettercairn offers a unique taste profile that’s just right for our second pour: the 1997 vintage )19-Year) single cask from MMCD (Murray McDavid). Our third and featured whisky is Bladnoch 26-Year\, its 2020 limited ‘distillery exclusive’ release. It’s a real cracker that I’m sure you will enjoy. \nI have an on-going internal debate which Dalmore core expression is better: Dalmore Cigar Malt or 1263 King Alexander III. For this event\, I’ve landed on Dalmore Cigar Malt. It was created decades ago to accompany fine cigars (no smoking at our event). Thankfully\, it was bottled at the decent strength of 44% ABV. \nBen Nevis is my nominee as the most underrated great single malt that you will ever have the pleasure of discovering. It offers an array of rich sherry flavors and will pair up well with our previous pour. GlenAllachie Lum Reek is a lightly peaked blended malt (GlenAllachie & BenRiach) that really works whereas Lagavulin\, our final dram\, affords a power arsenal of maritime flavors. \nDo please join us and bring a friend: “Good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU: \n1. GLENCADAM Single Malt / 1990 Vintage (20-Year) / 43% ABV / IB: Gordon & MacPhail (MacPhil Collection) / Dist Owner: Angus Dundee Distillers PLC (Hillman) / Highland (Eastern) \n2. (Emperador Distillers Inc.) / Highland (Eastern) \n3. BLADNOCH Single Malt / 26-year / ‘2020 Talia Edition’ (Red wine casks of American oak) / CS 44% ABV / NCF / OB / Dist Owner: Bladnoch Distillery Ltd. (David Prior) / Lowland (Wigtown\, Dumfries) \n4. SUMMARY:ESPY House Bourbon Tasting w/ Todd Eichelberger
DESCRIPTION:THE ESPY HOUSE \nLocated in historic Bedford\, Pennsylvania. was built around 1771. At the time\, it was considered one of the\nmost beautiful homes in all of Bedford. several famous Americans have occupied the house over the years\,\nbut none more so than president George Washington. He used the house as his headquarters during the\nWhiskey Rebellion of 1794. Today\, the ESPY House is owned by Todd Eichelberger who was inspired so\nmuch by the history of this historic location that he created a whiskey of superior taste and prestige to\ncommemorate the house and its historic inhabitants. \nCOLONEL DAVID ESPY \nThe ESPY House was named after colonel David Espy who was a very influential and prominent business\nman and politician In Bedford\, Pennsylvania during the late 1700’s. he was also a revolutionary war activist\nwho Aided troops with supplies and helped keep the peace in a highly volatile period of American history. \nTODD EICHELBERGER \nIs the owner of ESPY House Spirits LLC and of The Espy House (֊1771). \nTHE WHISKEY REBELLION \nIn 1794\, congress repealed a tax on distilled spirits\, but replaced it with a new one causing the onset of\nwhat was later known as the “Whiskey Rebellion.” Western Pennsylvania residents were unceremoniously\ninformed that the new tax would be collected\, by force if necessary. They felt the tax was unfair and\norganized the first rebellion against the fledgling US government. President George Washington mobilized\n12\,950 troops from eastern Pennsylvania\, Virginia\, Maryland\, and New Jersey under general Harry Lee\,\nwith the intent on quelling the rebellion and asserting the government’s authority to enact and enforce\nlaws. The rebellion ended with only minor confrontations and no loss of life. \nWHISKY MENU:\n1. SUMMARY:Loch Lomond/Glen Scotia/Littlemill w/ Forbes McMullin
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever had a $3000 scotch? Would you like to? \nForbes McMullin of Loch Lomond distillers will be flying to town to visit us. The company has two active distilleries\, Loch Lomond and Glen Scotia\, and a ‘dead’ distillery\, Littlemill\, now forever closed\, that began in the 1700s. \nForbes will be sharing the following bottles: \nGlen Scotia Double Cask\nGlen Scotia 15yr\nGlengarry\nGlengarry 12yr\nLoch Lomond 12yr\nLoch Lomond 18yr\nLoch Lomond Kerr Cellars \nOne more thing… \nForbes has arranged to get us a price break on the $3000 bottle of Littlemill 27yr\,  a thing of true beauty. The club will buy it for $2000 and it would take 50 of us paying $40 each to cover the cost. Are there 50 of us in this new club? No\, but our LA club will soak up the rest\, so no worries. \nWonder what that pour of Littlemill 27yr would cost you at a bar (we’re talking a nice Vegas casino to even find it)? Well\, it would be a $1000 pour per the standard pricing. Now granted\, it would be a full bar pour\, so let’s say a $333 pour compared to ours. KC Scotch Club will be sampling this scotch and the rest of the above lineup for $45. Cheers! \nWhile the club is still small enough\, we’ll be at Andy’s (new) home in Overland Park.
