SUMMARY:The Winter Worries Wane With Whisky
DESCRIPTION:“Winter Worries Wane With Whisky” Let’s test this theorem with a whisky experiment. By the time we complete the sixth stage of this experiment\, I believe that you won’t be thinking about the weather. We haven’t featured one of better aperitif drams in 4 years\, so it’s time to call on Benromach Traditional single malt. From the Glenburgie Distillery\, let’s try the 15- year from the Ballantine’s SM Series. The most recent Deanston elixir that we tasted was\nalso in 2021. I’ve selected its 12-year-old which is a tasty 46.3% ABV whisky that is finished for several weeks in toasted virgin oak casks. Dailuaine is among the most underrated distilleries in Speyside. \nAlthough the same size as the well-known Glenfarclas and Glen Grant distilleries\, only a tiny portion of its single malt is bottled as such. Why? Because Diageo uses most of its output for blending Johnnie Walker\, White Horse\, and Old Parr. Let’s go with a cask strength 52% ABV 11-year-old from the good folks at Battlehill. Over my 14-year Atlanta residence\, I’ve notice that the most popular SM are Oban and Talisker. We will give Talisker Storm a go. Now for a big ending with the star of the show being Ardbeg Heavy Vapours. I’ve chosen the Committee Release at or about cask strength (50.2% ABV). Apparently\, they have extended the lower cut as the heavier phenols are in the 62% to 58% ABV end of the run. \nThus\, they have cut to feints a bit later than their standard point. I am quite happy with this flight and hopeful that it will create synergies whereby the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. So\, do join us and bring a friend\, because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU \n1. SUMMARY:Cyber Scotch Split #1
DESCRIPTION:—SOLD OUT— \nScotch Clubbers are now spread all over the country. Let’s split some bottles! For this series\, the club will purchase 14 bottle expressions and divide them into minis. For those who have been around a long time\, you will remember our 15×15 bottle splits (14×14 for Euro bottles)\, and this is the same but with an online twist. Like our Advent calendar\, the club will send you a shipment of minis. Unlike the calendar bottles\, these will be labeled with their contents and will be around twice as large (so expect to see the 2oz french square minis). We WILL do online tastings which you are welcome to attend or skip. I (Andy) will walk us through each sample but keep it light and fun and increasingly unsober. We will divide the online tastings (Zoom) into two rounds of 7 whiskies. \nAs we can only purchase whisky we have sold\, only the first 15 are guaranteed. For every 15 sales we get\, we will buy another bottle for splitting. In order to keep the tastings more personal\, we’ll split into smaller groups so that everyone can feel a part of the tasting. \nHere’s what I found interesting and want to try. These are overseas purchases so that we can experience NEW whisky (part of our founding mission.) Note\, these are not low-end bottles. If we are going to do this\, we are going big. \nI estimate these will get to you in mid-April.  (it takes 3 weeks just to get them to me from London.) \nPLEASE NOTE THE EVENT DATE IS A PLACEHOLDER ONLY.  ONLINE TASTINGS WILL BE SCHEDULED TO FIT YOUR SCHEDULES. \nFOR NON-US PURCHASES PLEASE EMAIL THE CLUB \nThe Whisky \nBlair Athol 2007 / 16 Year Old / The Seasons: Winter\nMacduff 2003 / 21 Year Old / Berry Bros & Rudd for The Whisky Exchange\nArdmore 25 Year Old / Thompson Bros\nOrkney 2013 / 10 Year Old / The Seasons: Winter\nTomatin 1997 / 23 Year Old / Daily Dram\nOld Pulteney 2008 / 16 Year Old / #10 / Signatory\nBruichladdich 2004 / Bot.2011 / Islay Grown\nSecret Islay 2007 / 15 Year Old / The Whisky Agency and Three Rivers\nThy 2019 / Quarter Cask / Bot.2022 / Berry Bros & Rudd\nSmogen 2014 / 10 Year Old / Decadent Drams\nAmrut Neidhal / Single Malts of India\nSMWS 85.89 (Glen Elgin) / 2007 / 15 Year Old / For LMDW Artist #13\nAllt-a-Bhainne 1998 / 21 Year Old / Distillery Reserve Collection\nKnockdhu 2006 / 16 Year Old / Whisky Sponge Edition No.63

DESCRIPTION:To Help You Get Into The Holiday Spirit! Our whisky flight features some older bottlings (2 @ 21\, 1 @ 18\, 1 @ 15-Years) and some excellent limited edition expressions without an age statement. Imperial is a 21-year Speyside at 46% ABV. As GlenDronach was mothballed for 6- years (1996-2002)\, they have temporarily run our Parliament 21-year\, but Tom Lobonc has a bottle for us! In 2019\, Highland Park released Loki as the 2nd edition in its Valhalla range. Is it good? It is selling for £500 at Masters of Malt. Arran’s Angels & Devils (Punch Bowl range\, Chapter II) is a cask strength flavor bomb. \nMalts finished in manzanilla casks pique my interest\, when it is a Bowmore\, I am all in. Being the first release in Bowmore’s Vintner’s Trilogy\, Manzanilla Cask will be a very good one. Our Ardbeg Drum is the 2019 Committee Release at cask strength 52% ABV. This one is finished in another personal favorite cask type: Caribbean Rum casks. And it worked to the point that Ardbeg’s phenols nicely offset the sweetness of the rum casks. The result is delicious! \nSo do come and consider inviting your friends as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” Here is to happier holidays and holiday spirits. \nWHISKY: 1 Speyside\, 1 Highland\, 2 Island\, 2 Islay \n1. SUMMARY:Happy Scotchgiving
DESCRIPTION:ScotchGiving: Yes\, it is the let’s be thankful season. I’m thankful for 3 good\nJapanese whiskies and 3 nice single malt Scotch whiskies from the Scottish islands\nof Islay and Jura. Takamine (Kyushu Island\, Japan) is a single malt based on a 100%\nmalted barley mashbill which is fermented with koji-yeast (with conventional\ndistiller’s yeast being added in the later stages). Miyagikyo is a single malt\nproduced by Nikka/Asahi on Honshu Island\, Japan. Our Fuji selection is a 50:50\nmalt to grain whiskies\, a quite high ratio making it a premium blend. I like\nBruichladdich’s Link Series\, Turnberry 14Yr was released in 2005. After 19 years\,\nthe remaining bottles are getting quite expensive. Jura Seven Wood is a 42% ABV\nsingle malt initially matured in an ex-bourbon barrel (1st fill) and then split into 6\ntranches and filled to French oak casks (toasted) of 6 different types of oak. And\nthis one will command your attention: Ardbeg Corryvreckan is the bourbon barrelaged\ncask strength 57% ABV big brother of the Ardbeg Uigeadail\, an Oloroso\nsherry-aged 54% ABV. Both are great! Our cuisine will be delicious\, so do please\njoin us and bring a friend\, because “Good whisky is made great when shared\namong friends.” \nWHISKY MENU: \n1. SUMMARY:Pre-order - Charbay - Not an Event
DESCRIPTION:It has been two and a half years since eight intrepid members from Scotch Club went on a quest to Ukiah\, CA to meet the magnificent mad scientist Marko Karakasevic at Charbay distillery to select our 2nd release. After two days of drunken revelry studious sampling\, the team scored up the tally sheets with a dead-even tie between a distilled Czech pilsner (similar to our 1st Release) and a stout whisky.  They were both too good to pass up\, so we made the pilsner our 2022 release\, but saved the stout for now.  It’s aged another two and a half turns ’round the sun since the team selected it\, and that time has done it some good. \nThis release is named Number Five is Alive\, due to the barrel being labeled 005 and having flavors that jumped out to get our attention.  Children of the ’80s may also recall a certain movie reference.  Although it is still a typical rocket fuel release at 149.6 proof\, this is more of a mature gentleman than a young buck.  The distinct hoppiness from our pilsner is still there\, but as a distilled stout\, you’re sure to notice a difference from our previous releases… if you are wise enough to purchase one. \nPre-orders will be $10 for the first bottle and $5 thereafter.  Final purchases will be made at K&L Wines Merchants for $180.   Shipping now available outside CA.   \nNotes per Andy Smith\nNose:  Sumptuous combination of leather and sugar.  A whisky drinker’s candy. \nPalate:   Just like the nose\, there is a sweet component that could be sugar with a hint of fruitiness\, like a very ripe apple.  Hops?  You bet\, but not overwhelming.  There is an antique leathery component that gives it a depth normally found in older bourbon.  None of this is subtle\, however.  This a typical\, 100% Charbay flavor bomb… until your tongue goes numb. \nFinish: Vaporous\, spicy\, and chewy.  You may resemble a dog eating peanut butter.  Don’t exhale near an open flame…

SUMMARY:Scotchtoberfest
DESCRIPTION:Heavenly Hostess Phyllis Smith has invited us to have our October tasting event at her lovely home in Roswell. Such a venue requires an equally great tasting menu. Let’s start with a 20-year highlander: Glencadam 1990\, a 43% ABV Gordon & MacPhail bottling. The legendary Glenburgie is the key-malt in the best blended Scotch brand: Ballantine’s. Again\, from Gordon & MacPhail\, we will taste Glenburgie 10-year aged in sherry casks and bottled at 43% ABV. \nOur middle drams consist of a bourbon barrel aged Glenallachie 18- year and the bourbon aged and sherry finished Bunnahabhain 12-year\, both at 46% ABV. I’ve paired our final two elixirs: Springbank 18-year at 46% ABV and Bowmore Dorus Mor\, a cask strength 54.9% ABV aged in fresh bourbon barrels. \nSo\, do join us at Phyllis’ lovely home for an evening of good food and whisky. Please bring a friend as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nNotice: You must input the # in the gate keypad: #0905 \nWHISKY: \n1. SUMMARY:Liz’s Lowlander Launch - Bladnoch Single Malt
DESCRIPTION:Liz’s Lowlander Launch – Bladnoch Single Malt: In 2021\, Chuck\, Raj\, and I had the pleasure of visiting the lovely newly-rebuilt BLADNOCH Distillery by the Scottish Borders. Is Bladnoch a good malt? It’s a great dram\, as evidence by my expenditure of $900 for 3 special releases! So\, I’m looking forward to our Bladnoch event. \nLet’s start the evening with Bladnoch Vinaya which was conventionally aged in a combination of bourbon or sherry casks for its full maturation. It was bottled at 46.7% ABV\, non-chill-filtered\, and no coloration added. Samsara is aged for about 11-years (although no age guarantee is recorded on its label) in Bourbon and red wine casks. It’s also 46.7% ABV and NCF. Next up is Alinta\, a peated dram from PX sherry and bourbon casks. This one comes in at 47% ABV and is NCF. \nLiora is Bladnoch’s first core expression at cask strength. After maturation in new oak and bourbon casks\, it was bottled at 52.2% ABV without reduction. We will wind things up with 2 aged statement expressions. The 11-Year was aged exclusively in fresh bourbon barrels of charred American white oak and bottled at 46.7% ABV without filtration or coloration. Its 14- Year was matured in Oloroso sherry casks for its full maturation and then bottled at 46.7% ABV on a NCF and NCA basis\, all being best practices. Do come and bring a good friend to chat with Liz Espy and enjoy the whisky creations of Nick Savage\, Ph.D. (Engr)\, and David Prior\, the owner of Bladnoch Distillery. \nMay I suggest: Don’t miss this one! \nWHISKY MENU: 6 Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whiskies \n1. SUMMARY:A Summer's Swan Song Soiree
DESCRIPTION:As the Scotch calendar lists September-thru-March as the unofficial whisky season\, let’s have a dandy pre-season dramming session. \nWaterford’s The Cuvée is a vatting of 25 of its organic Irish single malts\, each of the expressions was based on the crop of a single farm with each farm’s soil type agroecologically paired with the ideal Irish heirloom barley variety. \nPrichard’s is a top-tier American craft distillery. We will try its American single malt. What’s my favorite 13-Yr single malt? That would be Craigellachie. \nAwesome\, a must have! Suntory Global’s malt master and I were once asked our favorite Beam-Suntory (now Suntory Global) single malt: we both answered Glen Garioch\, thus forsaking Ardmore\, Auchentoshan\, Bowmore and Laphroaig). \nFettercairn is the most disrespected Highland single malt. Let’s work on correcting that injustice. I like Ardbeg and my favorite expression is its Uigeadail\, which is finished in Oloroso casks. \nOur cuisine will be delicious\, so do please join us and bring a friend\, because “Good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU: \n1.
