SUMMARY:Let’s Leap Early
DESCRIPTION:“Let’s Leap Early; Why Wait Until 2028?” Although it would be appropriate to name a whisky after my friend Charlie Maclean\, Scotland’s top whisky writer and whisky expert\, Maclean’s Nose is named after a prominent landmark near the Ardnamurchan Distillery. This blended scotch is the antithesis of Johnnie Walker Black: it is 70% malt whiskies (Ardnamurchan and Glen Scotia) and 30% grain whiskies. Let’s try a Glen Elgin 17-year-old single cask from Signatory. Next\, from the new Nc’Nean distillery in the highlands\, we will give its Organic expression a go. Then we’re onto 2 new releases: Highland Park Heather (Cask Strength range)\, and Springbank 5 Year-Old\, from its Cask Strength range. Ardbeg Smoke trails is its newest GTR (Global Travel Retail aka Duty-Free Shops) exclusive offering\, it’s a 46% ABV’er from a combo of Bourbon HH and Manzanilla Sherry casks… and it’s yummy! Come and see. \nBring a friend and join our dram family. \nWHISKY MENU \n1. SUMMARY:A TASTE OF THE D.R. & SCOTLAND
DESCRIPTION:I’ve Got Thursday On My Mind! You might ask: “What happens when you pair a fine Dominican cigar with the best single malts in the world? One might respond: “Come and see.” La Galera JADE toro is a premium\, medium-bodied Dominican cigar known for its rare African Cameroon wrapper\, offering flavors of cedar\, spice\, brown sugar\, and coffee with a creamy\, peppery finish\, crafted by Jochy Blanco at Tabacalera Palma (Tamboril\, Dominican Republic) with a Criollo binder and Piloto Cubano/Criollo 98 fillers\, providing a rich\, smooth experience. Under Jose “Jochy” Blanco (former SVP of Joya de Nicaragua S.A.)\, the Blanco family owns 5 farms in the Dominican Republic’s Cibao valley. With 600-acres under tobacco cultivation\, Tabacalera Palma has a sufficient supply of grade A tobacco to meet its production needs. While it has historically imported wrapper tobacco from Cameroon\, Mexico\, Nicaraguan\, Sumatra\, and Connecticut\, that’s about to change with the introduction of domestic wrapper grown on the Palma Estate. You will enjoy my 4 single malt selections. The Glenglassaugh 12-Year is GREAT and Oban 14-Year is OUTSTANDING! There’s plenty of parking in the front\, side\, rear and shopping center. SUMMARY:El Septimo and Single Malt
DESCRIPTION:TGIF is optimized with an after work fine cigar & single malt! El Septimo’s SE Sales\nManager\, Kevin Petosa\, will tells us about the ultra-premium El Septimo Cigar line\nwhich has taken the industry by storm. I’ve selected 4 fine single malts which will\npair up nicely with our El Septimo cigar. Speyburn 10-Year is a Speysider owned by\nInver House Distillers\, which owns 5 malt distilleries in Scotland. I’m over the moon\nabout Craigellachie 13-Year. The Craigellachie distillery\, one of Bacardi’s 4 Scottish\nmalt distilleries\, is one of my favorites. One of the most popular single malts in our\nfair city is Talisker. The Talisker Distillery is on the Isle of Skye\, off the western coast\nof Scotland. We’ll taste Talisker Storm\, a full flavor\, moderately peated dram.\nTalisker was the favorite whisky of Robert Louis Steveson. Mr Stevenson famously\npraised Talisker in his 1880 poem\, “The Scotsman’s Return from Abroad\,” where he\ncrowned it the “king o’ drinks”. He later clarified his ranking\, stating\, “I have since\ntried Glenlivet and Islay\, but Talisker remains my favorite”. Smokehead is a heavily\npeated Island single malt. The producer (Ian MacLeod Distillers) has not disclosed\nthe distillery or the island of origin. The bloggers say that it is from Islay and the\nmajority believe it’s from the Lagavulin Distillery. Smokehead is supposedly 40ppm\nat the malted barley level whereas Talisker’s malted barley begins life at 18-25ppm.\nDo so join us between 3 and 8pm for a fun event. Remember\, “good whisky is made\ngreat when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU ! \n An Ultra-Premium El Septimo Cigar & 4 Top-Shelf Single Malt Whiskies @ $30 !\n1. SPEYBURN Single Malt / 10-Year / 43% ABV / OB / Dist Owner: Inver House Distillers Ltd.\n(International Beverage Holdings Ltd./Thai Beverage PLC) / Speyside (Rothes)\n2. CRAIGELLACHIE Single Malt / 13-Year / 46% ABV / NCF / OB / Dist Owner: John Dewar & Sons Ltd.\n(Bacardí Limited) / Speyside (Central)\n3. TALISKER Single Malt / ‘Storm’ / NAS / 45.8% ABV / NCF / OB / Dist Owner: Diageo Scotland Ltd.\n(Diageo plc) / Island (Skye)\n4. SMOKEHEAD Island Single Malt / ‘Classic’ / NAS / 43% ABV / IB / Dist Owner: Unk (Lagavulin?) /\nBrand Owner: Ian MacLeod Distillers Ltd. (Peter J. Russell & Co.) / Imp: Keepers Quest Inc. SUMMARY:Right Launching 2026
DESCRIPTION:“Right Launching 2026” I selected 3 bottles that I brought back from Scotland to kick off our 2026 tasting year. We’ll start with a dram born on the eastern bank of River Findhorn: Benromach Traditional is a tasty apéritif style single malt\, the perfect first whisky. Moving over to the Flow on the Isle of Orkney\, Scapa Glansa is an interest ‘tween’ dram aged in Bourbon casks and then finished in smaller cask of an Islay origin. Back across the Pentland Firth to Thurso on the northern coast of Scotland\, let’s try Wolfburn Morven\, a lightly peated single malt. Moving to the outskirtsof Glasgow\, you will enjoy the Auchentoshan Silver Oak\, a 1990 vintage 23 Year at 50.7% ABV batch strength. Raj and I really enjoyed it! You ask: But what’s going on in Campbeltown? Springbank offers an ‘Infinity Barrel’ on a fill-your-own-bottle basis. I promptly filled our 58.91% ABV bottle. Now for a big finish: the Lagavulin 12-Year Special Release of 2024 aka Fireside Tales. It’s at 57.4% ABV. \nCome and see. Join our dramming family. \nWHISKY MENU \n1. SUMMARY:Bernie's Big Bountiful Bash
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year!  The temperatures have “dropped” to a brisk 80F and the sun is shining bright enough to require ample sunscreen.  Yes it’s December in San Diego\, bringing us holiday traditions like holiday parades\, December Nights\, Candy Cane Lanes\, the Parade of Lights\, but most importantly\, the annual SDSC Holiday Party!  We’ve pulled some fun and festive Islay whisky (and a Highland Park) from the vaults to dram\, and in the festive holiday spirit\, to share.  A bottle share\, to be exact.  In addition to the usual potluck\, we will also have a bottle share including some scotch club bottles from events from past events.  Please feel free to bring up to 1 (ONE!) of your own bottles to share\, can be open or sealed.  We will also be doing the usual holiday white elephant sample exchange (details below). \n  \nWhite Elephant Sample Exchange: This is similar to a traditional white elephant gift exchange.  Please bring a LABELED! 1 or 2oz Boston round (mini) scotch bottle.  It can be from anything in your collection\, we usually have some very good samples\, so bring something special. \nRules: all samples will be placed in bags or wrapped so no one knows what they are.  We will draw numbers and then go in order starting at 1.  The first person will pick a sample from the bunch\, open it\, and show it to everyone.  The next person\, 2\, will then choose to steal the first person’s sample or open a new one.  We continue this until all samples are open and everyone has 1 to take home.  2 important caveats: 1. Each sample may only have a total of 3 owners (2 steals)\, after that it is locked and can no longer be stolen.  2. At the very end the first person who went may trade samples with ANYONE\, including locked samples (house rule)\, making the #1 spot very desirable…  Please email if you have any questions or if you are unable to provide a sample (I can provide something good for you). \n  \nFood: Potluck\, please sign up here and add what you’re bringing (if the link doesn’t work for you\, search on https://www.PerfectPotluck.com/ for last name “Baer” and password is “1”): \nhttps://www.perfectpotluck.com/meals.php?t=BAVP8738 \nThe scotch lineup will consist of the following (and whatever you bring to share): \nThe Whisky \n\nBruichladdich Friends of Bruichladdich 13yr Amarone and Bourbon 1st fill\nHighland Park Little Lebowski Urban Achievers 12.5yr sherry seasoned Firkin cask\nKilchoman Mahir Bay ACE Spirits collaborative vatting (95% bourbon 5% sherry)\nLagavulin Offerman Edition Charred Oak 11yr (2023)\nKilchoman PX (The New.WhiskeyOrder/PITCH/Travis Williams/AWC pick)\nPort Charlotte PC10 Second Limited Edition\nGrander Little Lebowski Urban Achievers Islay cask finish Panama Rum

SUMMARY:Scotch and Dominican Cigars - Dec 19th
DESCRIPTION:I’ve Got Friday On My Mind! \nYou might ask: “What happens when you pair a best-selling Dominican cigar with the best single malts in the world? One might respond: “Come and see.” The La Galera 1936 toro is a box-pressed gem from Tabacalera Palma. Under Jose “Jochy” Blanco (former SVP of Joya de Nicaragua S.A.)\, the Blanco family owns 5 farms in the Dominican Republic’s Cibao valley. With 600-acres under tobacco cultivation\, Tabacalera Palma has a sufficient supply of grade A tobacco to meet its production requirements. While it has historically imported wrapper tobacco from Cameroon\, Mexico\, Nicaraguan\, Sumatra\, and the US\, that’s about to change with the introduction of some domestic wrapper grown on the Palma Estate. \nLet’s try Glenfarclas 17-Year-Old\, which is a terrific Speyside whisky. Owned by John (dad) and George (son) Grant\, Glenfarclas is one of the most revered distilleries in Scotland. It is a prominent sherry cask aged single malt producer. Glenfarclas Family Reserve bottles go back into the 1950s and gather selling prices of up to a quarter million dollars. We will follow on with the tasty Glen Scotia Double Cask and the boldly delicious top-selling Amrut Fusion. So\, do join us for a lovely afternoon to early evening Cigar and Spirits Pairing with food\, friends\, and fun. \nThere’s plenty of parking in the front and rear. Y’all come! \nGLENFARCLAS Single Malt / 17-Year / 43% ABV / OB / Dist Owner: J&G Grant (The Grant Family) / Speyside (Central)\nGLEN SCOTIA Single Malt / ‘Double Cask’ / NAS / 46% ABV / NCF / OB / Dist Owner: Loch Lomond Distillers Ltd. SUMMARY:MASC’s Christmas/Hanukkah Holiday Event
DESCRIPTION:“Spirits of the Season” What better way to celebrate our holiday season (and Andy Smith’s birthday) than to select 6 bottles from Nick Ahlen’s whisky cellar! Glendronach 21-Year-Old is Parliament. It undergoes maturation in a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The “Parliament” name refers to a group of rooks that live near the distillery. Let’s go with an old friend\, Macallan 18-Year-Old should be on Mt Rushmore! I’ve poured M18 many times\, although I’ve noticed its current $350+ pricing. It’s special. And talk about old friends\, Oban 18-Year-Old and Talisker 18-Year-Old are popular calls at every legitimate whisky bar globally. \nHave you noticed that Bunnahabhain has the knack for coming up with some outstanding and unique special releases? Its 2023 Feis Ile release is Coterie Exclusive – Rioja Cask Finish\, a 55.8% ABV cask strength beauty. It was initially matured in bourbon barrels of charred American white oak and then finished in excellent Spanish red wine casks. Now for the big send-off\, we are onto Lagavulin Distiller’s Edition which was double matured in bourbon and PX sherry casks of toasted American white oak. \nAfter you buy your tickets\, please advise of your party’s meal preferences: beef\, chicken\, fish\, or vegetarian. \nDo join us for our holiday tasting and bring a friend\, as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU \n1. SUMMARY:Scotch per Martha's Request
DESCRIPTION:“Martha’s Request” Why not have our tasting on November 20th? As I couldn’t think of a reason not to\, that’s our event date. We’ll start with Heart of Speyside\, a terrific aperitif style dram from BenRiach Distillery. I’m over the moon about the new Tullibardine Artisan\, a delicious single malt. From the Harris Distillery on the Isle of Lewis\, The Hearach is a lightly- peated young\, but fully mature single malt. I brought a bottle of the fine Springbank 10 Year back from Scotland\, as it’s seldom been available in Atlanta for 5 years. Tragically so: it’s my go-to dram! Next is The Balvenie 14-Year Peated Triple Cask\, checking in at 48.3% ABV and 30-ppm. I do prefer The Balvenie at 48% ABV or higher as the higher strength assuages its sometimes-excessive sweetness. Our final dram is Smokehead’s top bottling\, High Voltage at 58% ABV without chill-filtration or coloration. Oh\, my\, this is a must have fine value single malt! If this was labeled as Lagavulin\, which is its origin\, it would sell for $180-230 a bottle. So\, do join us and bring a friend\, because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nJoin our dram family… November 20\, 2025 is a good date! \nWHISKY MENU \n1. SUMMARY:The Twelves
DESCRIPTION:“Twelve Years: Too Old for a Car; Too Young to Vote; Perfect for Dramming” I know someone that is weary of hearing folks utter demeaning and inaccurate things about thesingle malts in the 12-year-old and under category. He/She/They/Them/It may have a valid point. Let’s explore the world of Scotch single malt whisky. \nLoch Lomond 12 Year has received Gold medals at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition for 7 consecutive years (2019-25)\, earning it ‘Hall of Fame’ status. TWSC also awarded LL12 the 2025 Best Value award. Glenglassaugh 12 Year was produced by Billy Walker after his 2008 purchase of the distillery. GG12 was triple matured in bourbon\, sherry\, and red wine casks. I bought the last bottle of Glen Scotia 12 Year at the distillery shop last month. This is the new 12-year core bottling\, as the former 12-year was dropped in 2020. Glenfarclas 12 Year was conventionally matured in Oloroso sherry casks. The casks were toasted (not charred) with the majority being Spanish red oak. Kilkerran 12 Year is a core expression bottled at 46% ABV without chill-filtering or artificial coloration. It was made at Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown and couldn’t be called Glengyle as that name is owned by another bottler. Our final dram in Caol Ila 12 Year\, a beautifully balanced Islay single malt. I find it to be an elegant bourbon barrel aged whisky with just the right level of peatiness. \nSo\, do join us and bring a friend\, because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” Join our family… \nWHISKY MENU \n1. SUMMARY:Just Back from Scotland
DESCRIPTION:“Back from Scotland” On a monthly basis\, Metro Atlanta Scotch Club(August 2011) conducts an official whisky tasting at an area venue. Typically\, MASC hosts more frequent tasting events\, most of which areopen to our members. Let’s begin with a 10-year-old Dailuaine 43% ABV offering from Gordon & Macphail. The 1852 distillery has evolved into a 5.2 million litres of pure alcohol per year producer. Armorik is the best French single malt. We will taste its Double Maturation\, a 46% bottling. \nHow is Glenrothes 1995 vintage single malt? I bought 3 bottles; this is my last one. Now I urge you to discover Edradour single malt. I’ve chosen its 10-year flagship\, a 43% ABV bottling. GlenAllachie’s 10-year expression will command your attention as it is a batch strength bottling at 57.1% ABV. Our final dram will also be a good one: Lagavulin 12-year\, a 2018 release at 57.8% ABV. \nSo\, do join us and bring a friend\, because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” Join our dram family… \nWHISKY MENU \n1. SUMMARY:Why Clynelish
DESCRIPTION:Clynelish whisky has long been held in high regard by “people who know.” But because it is also a workhorse for blenders\, official expressions are fairly rare\, and even indie bottlings can be pretty scarce. SUMMARY:Bowmore with Rich Varga
DESCRIPTION:Every once in a while LASC does a BIG one and here it is. The club hasn’t done a Bowmore tasting since perhaps 2011 and that is way too long and we need to revisit this premier distillery and old favorite. Beam-Suntory’s  infamous brand ambassador\, Rich Varga\,  will be presenting Bowmore’s new core sherry collection\, but since this is an LA Scotch Club tasting\, we’ll be going far beyond that. Dusty boxes of rare Bowmores have been waiting for over a decade for this event; so we’ll also go on a trip to the past to visit Bowmore bottles from 20+ years ago in order to do a side-by-side comparison on how Bowmore has changed over the decades. And then\, for the fun of it\, we’ll try some rare $800 collectibles\, Voyage  and Claret. \nThis is NOT one to miss. \nThe Core Sherry Range\nBowmore 12yr\nBowmore 15yr\nBowmore 18yr\nBowmore 21yr \nThe LASC Bowmore Collection\nBowmore 12yr Seagull Label\nBowmore Legend Seagull Label\nBowmore 15yr Darkest Seagull Label\nBowmore 17yr Seagull Label\nBowmore 21yr Seagull Label\nBowmore Voyage\nBowmore Claret \nWe will be on the GlenArden patio where you may order food. \n

SUMMARY:Superlative Spirits - Small Batch Rum - SD
DESCRIPTION:Those who know\, know that this will be something special.  We don’t often flirt with other spirits here at the San Diego SCOTCH Club\, but I (Adam) was so impressed by Ryan’s rum offerings at Peatin’ that we (Ryan and Adam) agreed we needed a San Diego Rum event featuring Superlative and friends.  Nim has graciously offered to host us poolside to add to the tropical atmosphere. Address will be provided to all attendees\, it’s in Del Mar\, near Del Mar Height rd. and Camino Del Mar (101). \n  \nJoin us as we visit some elite small batch selections that are the “single malts” of their world. Not one\, but THREE independent rum bottlers will share their finds and creations and tell you their stories. Ryan Gilbertie of Superlative Spirits distributes these additive-free premium rums. \n\n  \nRum List\nBedford Park- Foursquare 2006 17yr Single Bourbon Cask 59.6% (Barbados)\nMainland- California 8yr Single Bourbon Barrel 64%\nMainland- Louisiana 10yr Single Bourbon Barrel 60.4%\nRaising Glasses- Filumena- Single Sherry Cask 58.1% (Canada)\nRaising Glasses- Pelee’s Fury 3- Grand Arome 62.5% (Martinique)\nRaising Glasses- Perennia- Caroni 27yr Single Cask 58% (Trinidad)\nRoaming Road- Worthy Park 12yr Single Cask 64.1% (Jamaica)\nRum Et Al- Baseline Micro Batch 2 Still Strength 75% (Los Angeles)\nBONUS POUR- Foursquare 10yr Criterion 56% \n  \n\nA little more about Ryan and the Superlative Spirits story:\n\n  \nRum is the most diverse spirits in the world with the complexity and terroir to match any good Bourbon\, Scotch or Tequila. Additive free\, cask strength rum has been popular in Europe for 30 years but sadly almost none of it makes it to the US. Instead (with a few exceptions) we’re inundated with mid to bottom tier rums made for mixing\, bottled at 80 proof\, and brimming with added sugar\, \nflavoring\, and God knows what else. \n  \nBut that’s all about to change. Now\, for the first time ever\, US-based independent bottlers\, importers\, and American distilleries are releasing seriously sippable rums to the US market. I started Superlative Spirits Distribution to be the link between these new producers and the California consumer. To show the discerning spirits drinker that rum isn’t just for mixing anymore. It can be seriously sippable and stand up against the best distillates in the world from any category. \n  \nMainland Rum: \n  \nSeth Benhaim is the founder of Mainland Rum\, a pioneering American rum brand redefining the category with cask strength\, single barrel expressions. Known for his work with Infuse Spirits and Broken Barrel Whiskey\, Seth has built a reputation as a bold innovator and barrel hunter in the world of craft spirits. With Mainland Rum\, he brings a new vision for American rum\, enhancing its perception from pirate and tiki cliché to a fine\, familiar sipping experience adjacent to any high end whiskey or brandy. \n  \nRum Et Al: \n  \nI’m Robyn Smith and I’m a chemical engineer\, educator\, and distiller. My journey in the distilled spirits industry began in 2018 as the research chemist for lost spirits distillery making rum\, whiskey\, and brandy. My role there wasn’t just confined to the chemical analysis in the lab I built; I also got hands on experience working in production. I entered the spirits industry as a bourbon fan\, but quickly fell in love with rum (literally during my interview with lost spirits). \n  \nFast forward to 2024\, I partnered with Aaron Rokjer at Dead of Night Dstillery and launched rum et al! All of the rums I make are crafted entirely at the distillery in Los Angeles\, California. This collaboration allows me the freedom to operate as experimental distiller. I’m so excited to dive into those nuances and share this exploration with you. \n  \nFood will be provided by Adam and other members\, so if you’d like to participate in making something tropical\, please email Adam@scothclub.com (or txt or call) and let me know ASAP and we can use club funds to help fund some great eats to pair with the great rum!
