SUMMARY:Lochranza Bonanza: Isle of Arran
DESCRIPTION:The Lochranza Distillery on the Isle of Arran is home to Isle of Arran whisky\, which has a nearly cult-like following from some of the LA Scotch Club Members when we discovered it back in 2007. \nArran has a core range (many in fact) that you can find on the better shelves\, but once again LASC will be taking a different approach\, exploring the rarer overseas bottlings. \nSnacks and heavy bites provided. Pours will be 3/4 oz.

SUMMARY:Scotland Bound!
DESCRIPTION:Scotland Bound\, Scotland Bound\, I Wish Y’all Were Also Scotland Bound”……\n(I hope to avoid Gordon Lightfoot litigation for use of “Alberta Bound” lyrics): \nThe best way to prepare for a sennight in bonnie Scotland is to partake in some fine malts prior to boarding. Loch Lomond has just released Original\, a retromalt from the prior century. Balblair (Martha’s fav) is an awesome malt from the northern Highlands; let’s taste its 2005 vintage (13-yr) at 46%. From the good folks W&M\, Fettercairn (my fav) 1997 vintage (19-yr) via Murray-McDavid. Let’s try the first bottling of Kilkerran (9-yr from Sherry Casks) that told the world that it would be a cracker single malt. It wasn’t promising at 3 to 8 years and then at 9 … wow… it was brilliant! From the sub-continent\, we will taste Amrut Cask Strength (non-peated). When did you last have a dram of the great Ledaig single malt from the Isle of Mull? For good reason\, it’s the jewel of the Hebrides’… as it is where the famed Smokehead hails. Yes\, a fine flight of whisky is offered. \nPlease do come along and invite your friends as ‘good whisky is made\ngreat when shared among friends’. We’ll have lots of good food to go with it.

SUMMARY:Scott's Selection
DESCRIPTION:The benefit of being in a scotch club is that you have access to people who know their scotch history. And historic this is. Scott’s Selection was once one of the best (and priciest) independent bottlers and was very respected (except for the prices) by whisky experts. The company has receded into the boggy mists of history\, but an echo of their once proud past can still be heard in the dusty corners of old liquor stores. \nWe have 5 of them\, and thanks to someone knowing his history\, a few of them are truly special. \nJoin us for large pours (1oz) of five of these scottish fossils. Tickets provided. \n1984 Littlemill\n1984 Caol Ila\n1989 Macallan\n1967 Longmorn\n1990 Bruichladdich

SUMMARY:New to the Market!
DESCRIPTION:Three NEW-TO-MARKET SINGLE MALTS: Glenburgie 15\, Armorik Classic NAS & Balmenach 10. We will begin with Glenburgie 15-year from the new Ballentine’s Single Malt range. \nFor second whisky (the ‘tweener)\, Balblair 10-year\, a beauty of an indie bottling from G&M. Highland Queen Majesty is available at Total Wine. Some of the bloggers are sure that it is Glenmorangie\, but we’re not buying that story. In any event\, it’s a grand buy at $46 for a 15-year and 46% ABV Highland malt! Armorik Double Maturation was recently licensed in GA; Atlanta Beverage Co. has 3 expressions in stock. \nWe really enjoy this single malt. Another great buy at Total Wine: Bunnahabhain 6-yr: a delicious cask-strength\, heavily-peated beast from Battlehill/Duncan Taylor & Co. (Huntly\, Aberdeenshire\, SCO). Come and see; this whisky’s amazing! (Did you know that each clan had a rally-point (infantry term) (Battlehill) where they assembled prior to combat?) Our last dram is also a stunner which was purchased from the Scotch Malt Whisky Association: Balmenach cask-strength 10-yr bottled at 57.4% ABV. \nCome hungry: we will have lots of good food. You’re invited to bring a friend as ‘good whiskey is made great when shared among friends’. See you!

SUMMARY:Better Late than Never
DESCRIPTION:Glenmorangie Duthac\nGlenfiddich Cask Collection Reserve Cask\nDalmore 12\nLagavulin 16 (as promised to previous attendees) \nAll we can tell you about the mystery bottle is that is cask-strength and not one found in stores. There isn’t much left so this will require smaller pours for tasting. In fact\, not knowing how many people will be joining us on July 11th\, we can only promise the mystery pour to the first 10 people who register for the event. SUMMARY:Scotch for Summer
DESCRIPTION:Scotch for Summer! \nAfter a protracted search\, two of our illustrious members found 4 bottles of Glen Grant The Major’s Reserve. It is a wonderful aperitif and\, incidentally\, a fine dram to enjoy during the summer. I can’t understand why Glen Grant malt\ncontinues to be only #10 in worldwide Scotch single malt sales. I bought two bottles from an estate sale: Glenfarclas 17 and BenRiach 10. As both were bottled in 2000- 2002 and thus distilled in 1983-1985 and 1990-1992\, respectively. It will be interesting to see if they taste like the corresponding contemporary bottlings. Samsara is a new NAS expression from the now producing\, rebuilt in place and expanded Bladnoch distillery. \nIan MacMillan\, the legend who created this whisky sent me 100ml samples of all three of its current releases from the whisky inventories that were purchased with the recent sale. Ian told me that the Samsara is actually 11 years old. Cotswolds is the best thing to come out of England since Brian Close\, CBE (1931-2015) and that is saying it’s something very special. We will raise a double dram of Cotswolds Founder’s Choice 60.3% ABV in a toast to England’s greatest ever cricketer. Laphroaig Four Oak is the legendary Simon Brooking’s favorite from Laphroaig’s Global Travel Retail (aka Duty-Free) offerings. \nCome hungry: we will have lots of good food. You’re invited to bring a friend as ‘good whiskey is made great when shared among friends’. I hope to see you! \n-Jack \n

SUMMARY:Pre-tin Meetin' BBQ with Kilchoman
DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, LA Scotch Club met months before Peatin’ Meetin’ for a little BBQ to get the season going… and we’re going to do it again. Join us for an ol’ school night of peat smoked bbq and peated whisky. This year we’re going to feature Kilchoman distillery\, but this is no little sponsored tasting\, we’ll be going through NINE expressions (or more)\, many of them collectible bottles that have been hiding in boxes for years. This will be EPIC Kilchoman. \nJust as we did in 2014\, we’ll enjoy the day in John McDonald’s South Pasadena backyard while smoking steak over Irish peat. \nIt will be the best night of the year… till August 24th\, that is. \n-The Kilchomans-\nPLOWED Cask 351\nPLOWED Cask 364\nTwo of the highlights of the event. These two barrel selections were bottled for the PLOWED Society\, who have their names on some of the most legendary whisky in the world. \n100% Islay 2017 Release\nReleased in limited runs annually\, the 100% Islay range is the only expression distilled solely from barley grown and malted at the distillery. \nCask Evolution 10yr\nOne of the oldest single cask releases ever produced by Kilchoman\, this 10-Year-Old was matured in bourbon casks and bottled at 105 proof. \nPort Cask Matured 2018 Release\nThis expression is a vatting of 30 ruby port casks\, filled in Spring 2014 \nSingle PX Sherry Cask 2010/2015 Release\nInitially aged for four years in an ex-bourbon cask before being finished in a PX cask for four months \nElements of Islay KH1\nThis is the first Kilchoman of the revered Elements of Islay Series bottled for The Whisky Exhange in London. \nVintage 2009\nThe first Kilchoman Vintage release (a series of bottlings which specifies the year of distillation) to combine oloroso sherry and bourbon casks. \nSanaig\nAged in a combination of oloroso-sherry and bourbon casks\, this shows excellent balance between peat smoke and sweet citrus flavors. \nMachir Bay\nThe distillery’s mass market bottling\, a vatting of whisky matured in first-fill bourbon casks for around six years\, married and then finished in oloroso sherry butts.

SUMMARY:Saturday Will Never Be the Same
DESCRIPTION:“Saturday Will Never Be the Same” (To modify the title of a 1967 song): A better theme for our Saturday afternoon single malt tasting would surely be “A flight of grand drams for a great organization.” In the case of our first 3 whiskies\, the theme is Bourbon cask ageing at 46% ABV without chill-filtration or coloration. \nGlencadam 10 was introduced to me by Lorne Mackillop\, Master of Wine\, who\nhappened to be the master blender at Angus Dundee Distillers. Deanston Virgin Oak is a newer expression that I’m quite keen on. Our final Bourbon cask dram will be Cotswolds 2014 Vintage\, which is the best 3-year-old whisky that I’ve ever tasted! It is a stunner which makes me think what it might be at 10-12 years old. \nThe best of the fine Glenmorangie Extended Age Range is Quinta Ruban\, a 12-\nyear finished in port pipes for 2-years. Bowmore 15 (fka The Darkest) is a fine\nsherried whisky based on a 12-year maturation in Bourbon casks and a 3-year\nfinish in Oloroso sherry casks (mainly of toasted Spanish red oak). Our final dram\, will be the king of the Ardbeg core range: Uigeadail\, a peated single malt aged in sherry casks. \nIn sum\, it a fine way to support a great cause. So\, do please come along and bring a friend\, as you’ll not be disappointed! \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:Gentlemen Prefer Blends
DESCRIPTION:Why.  I.  Never! \nThe twits of the upper class are perturbed.  High End blends have traditionally been a mainstay of the shelves of those with more money than sense.  They are the folks that will judge a whisky by the bottle it’s in. The gaudier the better.  They don’t really like drinking scotch\, but they like the idea that they like to drink scotch.  Many of these blends are made “smooth”\, so as not to disturb the drinker with scotch that may taste too much like scotch.  We\, here in the SD Scotch Club scoff at them.  We NEVER buy them. \nBut you have to admit\, you’re curious\, aren’t you? \nSure\, we’ve seen them in the glass cases at duty free… lurking in crystal splendor above a thousand dollar price tag.  You’d never buy a bottle of course\, but you’d like to try a sip\, wouldn’t you?  Just for scientific purposes and all that\, right? \nThe SD (Blended) Scotch Club has gone and collected\, well\, around $5000 of top shelf blended gems from three different brands.  And these are bottles we think may be worth your time. \nJohnnie Walker \nHow could we not?  The reigning whisky sales champ sells millions of bottles to watering holes all over the world\, but they also have rare limited editions in packaging fit for a queen with prices also fit for a queen. \nJohnnie Walker Excelsior – This bottle was released in 1997 and claims to be made of whisky of around 50 years old (make what you will of that.)  If so\, then this whisky was distilled in the ’40s and ’50s.  Approx. value – $1000 \nJohnnie Walker King George V – This top shelf liquor store mainstay is that first step beyond Johnnie Blue.  Approx. value – $500 \nJohnnie Walker Private Collection 2014 – Like the Excelsior\, this limited edition is no longer made. Master Blender Jim Beveridge handpicked 29 casks from experimental stocks to create this blend.  The 2014 edition was made to emphasize ‘smokiness”.  Approx. value – $850 \nJohnnie Walker Blue – 1.75L – No good whisky tasting is complete without a little heresy.  Since Johnnie Blue doesn’t quite meet the lofty bar set for this event\, we are going to make a cocktail out of it.  Yes\, you read that correctly\, a Johnnie Blue cocktail with this comically large 1.75L bottle.  Approx. value – $400 (1.75L) \n\nBlack Bull (Duncan Taylor) \nWe know Duncan Taylor best from their Dimensions and Battlehill series that lead whisky proselytizer Peter Currie has shared with the LA club.  He’s occasionally slipped in a few tastes of the intro level Black Bull bottles.  We’re going to look at the other end of the lineup however. \nBlack Bull 30 – One of my favorite blends ever.  This blend is from primarily sherry casks and can go toe-to-toe with almost any malt in the world.  Sadly\, it is a relic of the past and you can only find it in auctions now.  Approx. value – $250 \nBlack Bull 40 Batch 1 – This is the original batch that began the Black Bull series ten years ago.  You can spend over a thousand dollars for the newer batches\, but you can only find this one with luck or a time machine.  Approx. value – $1200 \nRoyal Salute \nI love the Chivas Brothers Royal Salute series.  It’s flavorful and pleasant.  It has some of the easiest sippers on the planet and is the baby of Master Blender Colin Scott\, perhaps one of the nicest people on the planet. \nRoyal Salute 21 – While it’s lower pricetag doesn’t quite match that of the rest of the lineup\, the whisky does.  Approx. value – $180 \nRoyal Salute Stone of Destiny 38 – Now we’re talking.  This blend prompted me to shake Master Blender Colin Scott’s hand and thank him from the bottom of my heart.  There were no tears\, but my eyes did get a little watery. \n\nDinner is INLCUDED.  Chef Ray will be serving his “high end”  Brunswick Stew which may be worth $100 alone! \nPours will be 1/2 oz\, except for the Royal Salute 21 (1 oz) and 2 oz of Johnnie Blue in the cocktails. \nTickets are $105 or $65 for half-sized pours (except the cocktail.)

SUMMARY:BenRiach Launch Party Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:“Sure\, you’ve been invited to lunch… but have you ever been invited to launch?” \nNASA-Atlanta: we have a ‘go’ for launch!  There’s no better way to introduce 4 new BenRiach expressions to the Georgia market than (drum roll followed by the Churchill Downs ‘call to the post’ trumpet riff)… by having a LAUNCH PARTY!  And it isn’t difficult.  It’s just a question of gathering a bunch of whisky aficionados and sharing 6 drams of fine BenRiach single malt (including 4 brand new ones) and lots of good food at the attractive cost of only $30.  Location/Parking?  Landmark Diner (Buckhead) affords 92 parking spaces at the intersection of Roswell and Piedmont roads.  As this event is limited to 40 lucky ticket purchasers (and a few Brown-Forman and Empire Distributors folks)\, it’s wise to buy your tickets online now. \n\n—-Purchase Here—-\n\n\n\n—-Purchase Here—-

SUMMARY:Youthful Exuberance
DESCRIPTION:Last month we tasted a group of young\, very peaty whiskies. This month we tackle some youngsters with no more than a whisper of peat. We’ve assembled a collection six bottles\, from a “yesterday we couldn’t call it whisky” three year old from the newest distillery in the Highlands\, to an “almost grown-up” nine from Speyside’s rising star. \nHow will they stack up against they’re more assertive brethren? We’ll find out. \nReservations required – No walk-ins.

SUMMARY:Young\, Loud\, and Snotty: Peaty Whisky Under 10 Yrs Old
DESCRIPTION:The whisky world worships maturity\, with age statements of even basic expressions pushing higher and higher all of the time. But in the last couple of years\, connoisseurs have been rediscovering the joys of younger\, more sprightly drams. Whisky producers\, from independent bottlers to the distilling giants\, have been releasing expressions with single digit ages. Nowhere does this new cult of youth show better than with peaty whiskies. We’ve gathered together seven bottles\, from a barely legal three year old\, to a nearly respectable nine\, to find out just how good young peaty whisky can be. \n$30 – You are responsible for your own dinner tab\, but please order something so they’ll let us keep coming back. \n(For those not into peat\, watch for our tasting of young\, not-so-peaty whiskies\, coming soon).

SUMMARY:The Flight of the Light Brigade
DESCRIPTION:“Forward\, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!” (A reference to Captain Fraser\, the founder of Brackla Distillery who was a career soldier\, a battlefield-commissioned officer and quiet a character\, and Major James Grant\, the founder of Glen Grant\, who was both a legendary distillery manager and highly-decorated combat commander.)\nLet’s begin with Glen Grant Major’s Reserve. Grangestone 18-year-old Highland SM (a Total Wine brand) is aged in sherry casks. Our Royal Brackla is a 12-year by Ainsley Brae (a Total Wine brand); it’s aged in a combo of bourbon and sherry casks. Cotswolds is a terrific 46% ABV malt aged in first-fill Jim Beam barrels. I hand-filled our Highland Park bottle at the distillery in 2018; a 15 yr. at 60.3% aged in a first-fill sherry puncheon. I’m keen on Laphroaig Quarter Cask\, It’s a 48% beauty aged in JB/MM bourbon barrels (first-fill) and then finished in small Quarter casks (125-L) for 7-8 months.\nWhat a whisky flight! So\, do please join us for a fun (and delicious) whisky tasting at Landmark Diner. Be sure to invite a friend\, as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.”

SUMMARY:Comandon with Franck Vigneron
DESCRIPTION:Anyone remember the infamous Gnac Night of 2012?  Franck Vigneron is returning to Los Angeles to share his cognac and brandy.  Franck and Scotch Club have a great friendship because while we’re the single- maltiest club around\, Comandon is the single-maltiest cognac.  The time-honored tradition of making cognac in France hasn’t changed much in hundreds of years.  Big companies release a VS\, VSOP\, XO… repeat next year.  Franck\, however\, saw the industry change for whisky drinkers in the new millennium\, leaving blends for more unique selections.  So don’t expect your great great great grandfather’s cognac and brandy… get ready for something new.

SUMMARY:Friends in Low Places
DESCRIPTION:We will continue our exploration of the “Five Whisky Regions” by visiting the Lowlands. We’ve collected examples from all six working distilleries that currently have whisky on the market. Is there such a thing as a “Lowland style?” We’ll find out as we try these rare bottles\, including an Eden Mill Distillery\,  making us some of the first in America (and World!) to try it. \nAdvance reservations required; no walk-ins\, please. \nYou are responsible for your own dinner tab.  Please order something so they’ll keep inviting us back.

SUMMARY:Luck o' the Irish
DESCRIPTION:An Early Celebration: St. Patrick’s Day is Sunday\, March 17th! March is the right month to explore Irish whiskey\, so let’s cover the full range with 2 single malts\, 2 single pot stills\, 1 malt whiskey\, and 1 blended whiskey. \nSlane Castle is a triple blend (of single malt\, single pot still & grain whiskies) from 3 types of casks (virgin\,\nseasoned (bourbon) & sherried (oloroso sherry) from two varietals of oak (American white & Spanish red oak). \nThe Irishman Founder’s Reserve is a hybrid based on a vatting of single pot still and single malt (no column grain whiskies). I don’t know what to call it\, because this is the only such whiskey that I’m aware of. \nTyrconnell Irish Single Malt is excellent and the based value on the market. It is double distillery and unpeated… just like dozens of Scotch single malts… at Cooley distillery in County Louth. \nGreen Spot and Redbreast are 2 of the very best Irish premium whiskies. Both are single pot still whiskies (based on a ca. 50-50% malted and unmalted barley mashbill and triple distilled in copper pot stills). \nOur final Irish whiskey is an excellent one and is virtually unknown by American fans: Connemara. It is also  Cooley distillery from a mashbill of peated (ca. 20-ppm) 100% malted barley and double distilled. This is exactly how the peated single malts of Islay are made. I like Connemara more that most of the Islay alternatives… it’s that good. Thus\, our flight of Irish whiskey couldn’t be better! \nThe only thing that we might possibly lack is the pleasure of your good company. So\, do please join us as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends”. \nLINK: https://www.rootstockandvine.com/event/irish-whiskey-tasting/
