SUMMARY:Paul John Whisky with Koray Ozdemir
DESCRIPTION:Denver Scotch Club is back\, and we’ve got our biggest and best event yet.  There will be not one\, but two special guests.  The evening will include light Indian food\, including vegetarian and chicken appetizers\, from Little India.  Koray Ozdemir\, the infamous whisky rep from Paul John Whisky in India\, will tell us about the distillery\, Indian Whisky\, and why you will like it just as much as you like single malt scotch (and without the tariffs.)\nKoray will generously be sharing seven expressions of Paul John should you also wish to enjoy the whisky (hint: yes you do!) \nIn addition to the Paul John presentation\, Andy Smith\, president of Scotch Club (of which Denver Scotch Club is the newest member)\, will be on hand to discuss all things whisky\, including the history of the club\, the magnificent whiskies and events of the past\, and great ideas for the future.  It will be pictures\, videos\, and drams!  In addition\, Andy will have a special surprise pour for those who remember the most about Paul John whisky at the end of the night. \nThanks to the generous whisky donations from Paul John\, we only need charge for food and other expenses\, so we’re offering a special deal… with every ticket purchase you may bring one additional person\, WHO IS NEW TO THE CLUB for free.  You can split the cost if you want\, or you can opt not to bring an extra (but why wouldn’t you!)  So go out and find someone that may like great whisky. \nThe Whisky\nPaul John Nirvana\nPaul John Brilliance\nPaul John Edited\nPaul John Bold\nPaul John Classic\nPaul John Peated\nPaul John Christmas Edition 2019

SUMMARY:Rhum Ron Rum Part 2
DESCRIPTION:“Think rum\, think Caribbean\, think 90-degrees”  Rum is a spirit that’s distilled either from fermented molasses (a by-product from sugar refining making) or freshly-pressed sugar cane juice.  Because of its base material\, molasses-based rums generally have a sweet note and flavors of molasses\, banana and tropical fruit (their complexity is ramped up by aging them in barrels)\, while those made with sugar cane juice (like rhum agricole and Cachaça) have pronounced grassy and vegetal notes.  Rum is made in sugar cane producing countries\, especially those in the Caribbean.  Very aged versions are generally sipped neat\, while unaged and lesser aged spirits are mixed in classic Tiki and modern cocktails. \nPlantation owners first discovered that molasses fermented into alcohol. Later\, distillation of the alcoholic brew concentrated the alcohol and removed impurities\, producing the first true rums. Tradition suggests that rum first originated on the island of Barbados. As it’s a delightful flight\, do please join us and bring a friend as “good whisky (and RUM) is made great when shared among friends.”

SUMMARY:Blended Malts - The Other Scotch
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s heard of Blended Scotch. And if you’re part of this group\, then you know something about Single Malt. But what about Blended Malts? Thanks to the current tariff situation\, that “other scotch” has been (and no doubt will continue to be) the subject of much discussion. But what\, exactly\, is it\, and what’s in it for us? We’ve assembled a selection of whiskies\, from everyday sippers to collectible rarities\, to see what this oft overlooked style has to offer. \nMonkey Shoulder\nWilliam Grant & Sons \nOak Cross\nCompass Box \nJohnnie Walker Green Label 15yr. \nHector Macbeth 20yr.\nThe Sovereign for K&L \nTimorous Beastie\nDouglas Laing \nSingle Cask Nation Blended Malt 12yr. \nSerendipity\nMacdonald & Muir \nThe Big Smoke Islay Blended Malt (60%)\nDuncan Taylor \nYou are responsible for your own dinner tab\, but please order something\, so they’ll let us keep coming back.

Why it is pretty darn cool for me\, a guy from Dallas (the one on the Trinity River and home of DFW\, the Rangers and the Cowboys). \nAtlanta’s Michael Leidel\, a fellow MASCer albeit now outof- state\, is the owner of Dime Box Distillery\, non-producing bottler in Dime Box\, TX. For the first time ever in Georgia\, we’re going to taste all 4 of his Sixth Street bourbon/rye whiskeys. What’s more\, we’ll also taste 2 Garrison Brothers bourbon expressions. \nAs some of the bottles are something borrowed\, we’re able to pass on the cost savings to you. That said\, may I recommend that you bring a friend along for 3-ounces of something new Texas bourbon. \nThis will be a fun event\, so I hope you are available to join us. SUMMARY:Atlanta Burns Supper with Brown Forman
DESCRIPTION:Price all Inclusive \nYOU ARE INVITED to help us celebrate Robert Burns’ 261st birthday!  Due to the initiative of Amber Aristy\, Brown-Forman’s GA executive\, Atlanta will be joining in the worldwide observation of Rabbie’s birthday with a memorial dinner tasting. \nOur evening will feature a 4-course dinner prepared by chefs Shaun Doty and Lance Gummere as well as a welcoming cocktail and appetizers. \nDid I mention 6 single malts from 3 of Scotland’s top distilleries? In 2016\, Brown-Forman purchased the BenRiach\, GlenDronach and  Glenglassaugh malt whisky distilleries. They are 3 drams that make for a great way to celebrate Rabbie’s birthday!  From BenRiach (Speyside)\, we’ll taste 10-year\, 21-year Classic and 21-year Temporis. We’ll add GlenDronach (Highland) 12-year The Original (*if our shipment arrives in time\, GD-15 or GD-18 will be substituted for GD-12). From Glenglassaugh (Highland)\, let’s try Revival and\nEvolution. After adding a bagpiper\, swordsman\, and poets\, you’re assured of having a splendid evening\, one that would make old Rabbie proud. \nSo\, do please come along and bring a friend! Often referred to as “The Bard of Ayrshire”\, Robert Burns (1759-1796) wrote Auld Lang Syne; A Red\, Red Rose; A Man’s a Man for A’ That; To a Louse; To a Mouse; The Battle of Sherramuir; Tam o’ Shanter; and Ae Fond Kiss. In August 1787\, Lady Catherine Bruce knighted the late Robert Burns at Clackmannan Tower with the sword of her illustrious ancestor\, Robert the Bruce.  As neither the Stuart or Hanover clan thought much of the Bruces\, Rabbie remains a commoner.

SUMMARY:Cigars and Scotch
DESCRIPTION:Proprietor Harvey and Manager Bryan are opening the door for an evening of good Bourbon\, Rye and Cigars. After you add your favorite stogy\, you’ll have a winning formula: Fine Cigars + Good Whisky + Great Friends = An Grand Event @ Maxwell’s Cigar Bar! May I suggest that you grab a friend or two and head over to Maxwell’s Cigar Bar? Note new address (1/4 mile away). \nTHIS DOG WILL HUNT!   We’ve assembled the finest whisky flight that we’ve ever offered for $30.  Why?  It would be great to gather a crowd of cigar-loving single malt aficionados for fun evening at MAXWELL’S CIGAR BAR in Woodstock.  Speyburn Bradan Orach will lead things off. We don’t see much of it in our market\, so let’s enjoy the opportunity. \nLoch Lomond is a great distillery but not-much-talked-about. If you see a bottle of The Original or 12-yr\, be sure to pick it up.  Michael Henry is doing great things over there. \nTormore 14 is up next. It is the darling of the Chivas Bros. distilleries and one that you need to get to know. \nHailing from Brittany\, France\, Armorik Double Maturation has been aged in 2 types of casks.  It’s an excellent new single malt. \nCotswolds was brought to live by American Dan Szor and the late James Swan\, Ph.D. Without question\, it’s the best English malt distillery and one to keep an eye on. \nBattlehill?  Yes\, Peter Currie has done it again: Bunnahabhain 6 cask strength is great! See\, it really is quite a flight. \nAnd\, what’s even better\, you’re invited! So\, do please join us and bring a friend\,  because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends”.

SUMMARY:Breaking Out the Good Stuff
DESCRIPTION:“After 10-days\, it’s time for a Break” So\, we’re breaking out the good\nstuff: 6 single malts and lots of comfort food. \nGlen Moray Sherry Cask Finish (Speyside) is the key malt in two of the top ten best-selling Blended Scotches: Label 5 and Sir Edwards. With its capacity of 6-Mlpa (and plans to increase it to 9-Mlpa)\, its owner is now making a big effort in the US Single Malt Scotch market. That translates into attractive (low) pricing for us. \nGlen Ord 15 (Highland) is awesome stuff. It’s available at three places:\nJapan\, Taiwan and Glen Ord’s shop (the origin of our bottle). \nGlen Fohdry 12 (Speyside) is actually Kininvie Distillery 12\, something you seldom see in our market. \nGlenDronach 18 ‘Allardice’ is da bomb! If you’ve not tried it\, you’re in for a real treat! \nI bought our bottle of Aultmore 2011 vintage at the quarterly SMWSA tasting in Roswell. It’s a cask strength single cask at 67.5% ABV (135-proof) and just a great dram. \nCaol Ila 12 is expensive at $80\, but there’s a reason that I keep buying it: it is so well-made and complex that I call it the ‘thinking person’s dram’. Its package and label are way out-of-date and unattractive\, but it is one of my favorite peated dram. \nAs it’s a delightful flight\, do please join us and bring a friend as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.”

SUMMARY:LASC Holiday Party - Sweet Treats
DESCRIPTION:It’s December again! That means LASC gets back together for food\, drinks\, holiday cheer\, and more drinks. Something about this time of year makes us want to have sweets\, but LASC has something for your sweet tooth that won’t take exercise till mid-February to burn off. We’re talking some delicious Port and Sherry Casks here. \nWe’ve amassed some impressive bottles\, including a single cask 27yr Glendronach retailing for $1000\, that we got for half price thanks to some trading. Then there’s a Kavalan Port Cask exclusive from The Bottle House in San Diego that is FANTASTIC. We’ve got the DUTY FREE Balvenie Portwood 21yr that is said to be far better than its watered down cousin on shelves everyone. Who got the heavily sherried Binny’s Mortlach before they sold out? We did\, baby! Then there’s the little secret almost no one knows about… a Glenrothes\, yes Glenrothes\, from Adelphi that managed to get magnificently sherried in only 7 years. There should be enough for 3/4 oz of each of these. \nWell that’s the scotch\, but why not have a little more fun? We’ll be trying a 2003 vintage (a declared year for port) from one of the most prestigious houses\, Graham’s. We’ll also have an award winning sherry: Bodegas Dios Baco Oxford 1.970. \nThis year we’ll be in a rented space: The Enchanted Cottage\, complete with outdoor/indoor space and a gameroom. \nAs for food\, please sign up at our Potluck site.

SUMMARY:SDSC Holiday Lochranza Bonanza
DESCRIPTION:Ho Ho Ho\, it’s time for trees\, menorahs\, and scotch. This year we’ll be back in North Pole. Pardon\, North PARK. \nPer tradition we’ll have potluck and a white elephant whisky exchange featuring 1 or 2 oz minis of GOOD whisky to trade and steal. A Festivus airing of grievances may occur after we are good and sloshy. Bring an ugly sweater! \nRegister your food here \nThe Lochranza Distillery on the Isle of Arran is home to Isle of Arran whisky\, which has a nearly cult-like following from some of our LA members. Arran has a core range (many in fact) that you can find on the better shelves\, but once again SDSC will be taking a different approach\, exploring the rarer overseas bottlings. \nEthan Kelley\, Curator from Spirits Network and former Beverage director of Brandy Library will be on hand to chat all things boozey. He will also bring a bottle a Dun Bheagan 16 year Arran\, in addition to the same bottle that has been aging on site at Brandy Library for an additional 4 years in first fill ex-Bourbon cask.

SUMMARY:It's Dranksgiving!
DESCRIPTION:Thanksgiving cheer via this flight of holiday spirit on the night before! \nBoone County 10-Year\, a 90.8-proofer\, is definitely something to cheer about. It’s the distillery’s oldest bottling to date which was selected bottled exclusively for my friends at the Big A Bottle Shop in Marietta. \nOld Forest Signature\, 100-proofer\, is my go-to Bourbon. \nI’ve been singing the praise of Henry McKenna Bottled-in-Bond since I tried it in 2011. Its bona fides include 10-Years\, 100-proof and single barrel. \nThe new J.W. Kelly Double Oaked\, a single barrel Bourbon at 109-proof\, is a big winner. Our barrel was picked by the former managing partner of Signatory Vintage Whisky Ed Kohl. \nRare Breed is a 116.8° barrel-strength expression from Wild Turkey. Why did I select it? Because (1) it’s delicious! and (2) turkey (wild or domestic) is appropriate for Thanksgiving. \nNow (drum-roll) for a big finish: A Midwinter Nights Dram. It is an annual Rye release from the good folks at High West. Act 7 Scene 2 Edition\, the 2019 release\, comes in at 98.6-proof. I suggest that you begin searching for a bottle (or more). \nI’m confident that our flight will create some of those magical synergies for which we always aim. So\, do please join us at FREIGHT and do bring a visiting relative as “Good whiskey is made great when shared among friends”.

SUMMARY:Island Hopping
DESCRIPTION:  \nContact brett@scotchclub.com for last minute tickets. \nThis month we wrap up our exploration of the Five Whisky Regions with a visit to Scotlands unofficial sixth region. Currently part of the Highland Region\, there are six distilleries scattered over five islands: Orkney\, Skye\, Mull\, Jura\, and Arran; with more in the works (Islay is it’s own thing). There is considerable sentiment among whisky aficionados\, and within the industry\, to create a separate Island Region. Is there such a thing as “Island Character\,” or is an accident of geography/geology being used to push a marketing agenda? Let’s find out. \n$50 Dinner included

SUMMARY:Paul John Christmas Edition Launch
DESCRIPTION:Nothing says Christmas like Indian Whisky\, right? Well\, the world is changing so get used to it. The tariffs are here and Paul John Whisky is not part of it. They came our of nowhere a few years ago\, but they’re definitely a thing now. If you’ve been to a few of their tastings and are ready to stop reading with a “been there\, done that”\, well hold on a minute. \nSan Diego Scotch Club and Women who Whisky are working together to host Koray Ozdemir as he launches the new Paul John Christmas Edition. We’ll be the first to try! Oh\, and one more thing\, since we are SDSC\, we’re going to sample the uber-rare Paul John Mars Orbiter bottle ($450). It won’t be one of the (only) 45 coming to America. They haven’t arrived yet. The club is buying the bottle in Germany and one of our members will be bringing it back for us. \nIncluded with the tasting will be Indian chicken curry and sides prepared by Chef Ray. The event will be held in the private event clubhouse in Mardi Gras village of the Coronado Cays. \n(note: the event is in the clubhouse ACROSS from the address listed.)

SUMMARY:Whisky Season Has Arrived!
DESCRIPTION:November: Whisky Season Has Arrived! \nIt’s likely that you haven’t recently tasted Fettercairn\, Glen Ord or GlenAllachie. So\, let’s have those 3 and add BenRiach\, Balblair and Laphroaig of which you may already be a fan. BenRiach makes excellent all-rounder and digestif style whiskies\, but did you know that its Heart of Speyside is one of the best aperitif style whiskies? I buy every bottle of Fettercairn that I come across\, so I jumped at its new PX sherry bottling\, a 12YO available at Global Travel Retail (Duty-Free). \nNext\, Balblair 18YO is my favorite from the distillery’s new 12\, 15\, 18 & 25-year core range. It is a bright 46% ABV single malt headed to stardom. Singleton of Glen Ord is another hard-to-get-around-here favorite. We’re going to try the 2019 Distillery Exclusive bottling of 48% ABV malt initially matured in ex-bourbon casks before a 18-24 month finishing stint in PX sherry butts… yum! Then\, let’s try a dram of uncut GlenAllachie 7YO at 55% ABV from Duncan Taylor’s Battlehill range. It’s difficult to pronoun ‘Cairdeas’ (it’s in the neighborhood of Car-Chass and Car-Geous)\, but give it a go as Cairdeas is Laphroaig’s best dram… especially the 2018 edition from Fino sherry casks! \nIn sum\, it’s a most promising whisky flight! Do come hungry\, as we will have lots of good food\, too. Invite your friends as ‘good whisky is made great when shared among friends’. See you!

SUMMARY:Bunnahabhain and More
DESCRIPTION:Over a year ago John Pauley presented Deanston and Ledaig with the promise that Bunnahabhain would come later… that time has come. \nSD Scotch Club will be partnering with KnB in La Jolla and Terlato Artisan Spirits to share some great Bunnahabhain\, Tobermory\, and Deanston expressions. \nJust ten years ago Bunnahabhain was considered an also-ran in single malt circles but an improved lineup and renewed appreciation for its more subtle complexities has created a renaissance in appreciation for the Islay classic. Bunnahabhain sold out (50 tickets in LA) within days last year. That night’s favorite\, Bunnahabhain 25 will be there! \nAs part of your admission\, you will receive a $15 voucher for the store (to use that night). Food will not be provided\, but the downstairs deli is quick and delicious\, so show up a little early.

SUMMARY:Whisky That's Old Enough to Drink
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year we spent some time investigating the virtues of young whisky. This month we turn our attention towards the other end of the spectrum: Mature Malts. For your edification\, we’ve assembled a selection of single malts from twenty-one to twenty-eight years of age. Is older whisky better whisky? Let’s find out. \nYou are responsible for your own dinner tab\, but please order something\, so they’ll let us keep coming back. \nReservations Required – No Walk-ins.

SUMMARY:Lochranza Bonanza: Isle of Arran
DESCRIPTION:The Lochranza Distillery on the Isle of Arran is home to Isle of Arran whisky\, which has a nearly cult-like following from some of the LA Scotch Club Members when we discovered it back in 2007. \nArran has a core range (many in fact) that you can find on the better shelves\, but once again LASC will be taking a different approach\, exploring the rarer overseas bottlings. \nSnacks and heavy bites provided. Pours will be 3/4 oz.
