SUMMARY:Loch Lomond and Glen Scotia
DESCRIPTION:Denver Scotch Club will be back on Zoom this month with a friend known to some of the older clubs but new to us\, Forbes McMullen. Forbes will guide the club through a tasting of two distilleries\, Loch Lomond and Glen Scotia. Glen Scotia has been in the single malt world for a while now\, but Loch Lomond used to be rarely released on its own. That’s changed now\, and Loch Lomond is now the official whisky of the British Open. We’ll explore the core (US) range of both distilleries. \nJoin us on Zoom at 7:30pm MOUNTAIN with samples of EIGHT expressions of Glen Scotia and Loch Lomond.

SUMMARY:Cigars and Scotch at Maxwell's
DESCRIPTION:Proprietor Harvey Burkin and Manager Bryan Baxter are opening the doors for an evening of good spirits and tasty cigar pairings. May I suggest that you grab a friend(s) and head over to Maxwell’s Cigar Bar? It’s conveniently located on Towne Lake Pkwy\, just ¼ mile north of Main St. Woodstock. \nThis will be good fun! Our whisky is breaking out of the lock down\, so let’s help it escape. The Glenlivet’s 12-year-old is a delightful aperitif-style dram. Ainsley Brae is actually Royal Brackla 12-year\, a fine rich dram from Total Wine. Hailing from western Speyside\, Benromach wood finish is an 8-year beauty finished for 28- months in Sassicaia cask. Billy Walker’s GlenAllachie distillery has been winning most of the major awards the past 2 years… you will discover the reason when you taste his 12-year single malt. Ardbeg Drum is a 52% ABV bourbon cask matured and rum cask finished special release by The Ardbeg Committee whereas our final dram is the famed Smokehead High Voltage 58% ABV which is from a non-disclosed Islay distillery. \nWe hope to see you at Maxwell’s Cigar Bar in Woodstock… and do bring a friend as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” Sláinte! \nWHISKY MENU: \n1. SUMMARY:Loch Lomond - The Deep Dive
DESCRIPTION:Scotch Club will be visiting Loch Lomond alone during this special deep dive into a distillery that isn’t new\, but is new as a single malt to many. Although Loch Lomond has only recently began focusing on selling its single malts as a major brand internationally\, it has always been releasing whisky\, albeit under differing names depending on their style: \nCraiglodge\nCroftengea\nGlen Douglas\nGlengarry\nInchfad\nInchmoan\nInchmurrin\nOld Rhosdhu \nThese malts were primarily used in blends but did occasionally see the light of day as single malts\, often through independent bottlers. For this online event\, Scotch Club will be tasting both the US core range\, and some fun additions from the above list in an exploration of the many faces Loch Lomond distillery\, guided by Forbes McMullin. \nThe Whisky\nLoch Lomond Original – 1 oz\nLoch Lomond 12yr – 1 oz\nLoch Lomond 18yr – 1 oz\nOld Rhosdhu 1990 30yr Daily Dram – 1/2 oz\nInchfad Heavily Peated 2005 15yr The Cooper’s Choice – 1/2 oz\nInchmoan 2007 12yr Exclusive to The Whisky Exchange – 1/2 oz\nCroftengea 2007 11yr Jack Wiebers – 1/2 oz\nLoch Lomond 30yr – 1/2 oz \n$60 – Purchase here\n

SUMMARY:2021 High-End Single Malt Tasting
DESCRIPTION:“This is real… Not An April Fool’s Joke”: The best remedy for any lingering Covid-Shut-In-Blues is high-end single malt.  We’re quite sure that you’ll find our cure most enjoyable. Glenlivet 1991 Nadurra (18-yo) is made from the long-gone Triumph 2-row spring barley. Littlemill (closed in 1992) is a personal favorite. \nLet’s taste the 1988 (25-yo) aged in a sherry cask and bottled at 54.9% ABV. Jura (Triple Sherry Finish) is the 2016 Islay Festival annual release at 51% ABV. Next is Inchgower\, 1997 vintage (20-yo) at 61.5% ABV. Highland Park Ice Edition is a 2016 vintage (17-yo) limited release at 53.9% ABV. Ledaig is a moderately-peated 18-yo sherry cask beauty bottled at 46.3% ABV. \nBONUS: If we have 25 participants\, Dr. Lobonc will offer a 7th High-End single malt. In that event\, the participants will get to vote as to their choice from a selection of several bottles. I hope that you can join our tasting and do bring a friend because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU: \n1. I’m getting rid of it… and you are going to help.  Oh\, and just because I love you\, I sourced the newer Mortlach 15yr Six Kingdoms to replace the crappy Johnnie White Walker. \nJoin us as we plow through these on zoom and decide once and for all who has the best scotch in the Seven Kingdoms. \nThe Scotch\nCardhu Gold Reserve [House Targaryen]\nClynelish Reserve [House Tyrell]\nDalwhinnie Winter’s Frost [House Stark]\nLagavulin 9yr [House Lannister]\nOban Bay Reserve [The Night’s Watch]\nRoyal Lochnagar 12yr [House Baratheon]\nThe Singleton of Glendullan Select [House Tully]\nTalisker Select Reserve [House Greyjoy]\nJohnnie Walker White Walker Mortlach 15yr [The Six Kingdoms]

SUMMARY:Great Fun with Scotch in 2021
DESCRIPTION:Proprietor Harvey Burkin and Manager Bryan Baxter are opening the doors for an evening of good spirits and tasty cigar pairings. SUMMARY:Day Drinking with Ollie: The Single Malts of Scotland
DESCRIPTION:2pm PACIFIC – Zoom \nOver the past few years\, independent bottler “The Single Malts of Scotland” has established a solid reputation in Europe for the quality of it’s cask  selections. Earlier this year they began bringing their whiskies directly to the U.S. And now\, thanks to our friends at JVS Imports\, the Orange County Scotch Club will be among the first to taste the whiskies of their second U.S. Release. \nEven better\, we’ll have Oliver Chilton\, Head Blender for SMoS parent company Elixir Distillers\, live from London to guide us thru their five newest offerings.\nBut wait\, there’s more! As a bonus sixth selection we’ll also be tasting Elixir Distiller’s Black Tot Rum. This fine blended Caribbean rum was created to commemorate Black Tot Day\, that dark day in 1970 when sailors in the Royal Navy were issued their final daily ration of rum. \nEach participant will receive a set of six numbered one ounce samples. Their identities will be revealed at the Zoom meeting (and only at the meeting). Attendees will also receive a discount code for 10% off purchase of any of these bottles at The Mixing Glass in Costa Mesa. \nThe Single Malts of Scotland: \nArdbeg 19yr. 2001\nImperial 23yr. 1997\nOrkney (Highland Park) 14yr. 2006\nClynelish 10yr. 2010\nAird Mhor 10yr. 2009\nBlack Tot Finest Caribbean Rum

SUMMARY:Scotch and Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:7pm EASTERN \nYOU ARE INVITED to join for a virtual GlenDronach tasting featuring 3 top-shelf single malts with gourmet chocolate pairings. This MASC event will be led by Amber Aristy\, Brown-Forman/Atlanta. Please purchase your tickets ASAP as we only have room for 24 participants. No worries… there will be events for BenRiach\, Glenglassaugh and\, again\, GlenDronach in October\, November and December. If we have a strong demand\, perhaps we will be able to handle more participants in the future events. See you on Zoom! \nThe GlenDronach 12 paired with Gourmet Chocolate\nSweet\, round and creamy; Oranges\, plums\, walnuts\, chocolate\, sherry\, and soft spice oak. Swiss chocolate is chocolate produced in Switzerland. While cacao beans and other ingredients such as sugar can originate from outside Switzerland\, the actual production of the chocolate must take place in Switzerland. Switzerland’s chocolates have earned an international reputation for high quality with many famous international chocolate brands. Switzerland is particularly renowned for its milk chocolate. In 1875\, a Swiss confectioner\, Daniel Peter\, developed the first solid milk chocolate using condensed milk\, which had been invented by Henri Nestlé\, who was Peter’s neighbor in Vevey. The chocolate will well complement the sweet influence of PX and Oloroso maturation\, and floral flavors of GlenDronach 12. \nGlenDronach Portwood paired with Gourmet Chocolate\nSweet\, round and creamy; Oranges\, plums\, walnuts\, chocolate\, sherry\, and soft spice oak. The 17th century saw the start of chocolate processed in Switzerland. In the 18th century chocolate was only produced in a few areas\, such as the Ticino. In the 19th and early-20th centuries\, the following chocolate factories were founded: Cailler (1819)\, Favarger & Suchard (1826)\, Kohler (1830)\, Sprüngli (1836)\, Maestrani (1836)\, Klaus (1862)\, Peter/Nestlé (1867)\, Lindt (1879)\, Frey (1887)\, Tobler/Kraft Foods (1899)\, Chocolat de Villars (1901)\, Felchlin (1908)\, Stella (1928)\, Camille Bloch (1929)\, Teuscher & Bernrain (1932)\, Chocolats Halba/Coop (1933)\, and Kägi Söhne (1934). In the second half of the 19th century\, Swiss chocolate started to spread abroad. Closely linked to this was the invention of milk chocolate by Daniel Peter in Vevey and conching by Rodolphe Lindt. The sweetness/tartiness of the chocolate is the perfect accompaniment to bring out the sweet and nuttiness of the Portwood. \nThe GlenDronach 18 Allardice paired with Gourmet Chocolate\nRichly sherried malt is truly unforgettable with sweet aromatics of fudge and muscovado sugar and a taste of rich\, dark and seductive flavors of sweet fruits and allspice. In 2004\, 148\,270 tons of chocolate were produced in Switzerland. 53% of this was exported (North America 13%). The gross income of the Swiss chocolate industry in 2004 was $1.5 billion ($900m local market; $600m exports). In 1901\, Swiss chocolate producers created the Union libre des fabricants suisses de chocolat . In 1916\, this was divided into the Chambre Syndicale des Fabricants Suisses de Chocolat and the Convention Chocolatière Suisse. The former “Chambre syndicale” (today\, Chocosuisse) protects the interests of Swiss chocolate producers. The “Convention Chocolatière” focused on the quality of the chocolate and sought a uniform price strategy. The rich chocolate flavors really draw out the all spice\, sweet fruits and chocolate that the 18 years of aging in Oloroso casks brings to the whisky. \nWHISKY MENU: \nGLENDRONACH Single Malt / ‘The Original’ / 12-Year / 43% ABV / OB / Dist Owner: BenRiach Dist Co. SUMMARY:Black Friday Bundle
DESCRIPTION:The best remedy for any lingering ‘turkey overdose’ and ‘over-shopping’ evils is Scotch whisky and I’m quite sure that you’ll find my Rx most enjoyable. This Glencadam is da bomb! I just love this style of whisky\, because it for its unique taste and interesting complexity. Glenlivet Triple Cask Matured is the half-step in strength that sought in a #2 slot whisky. Here’s a lovely dram that is currently missing from Arran’s core line-up: Arran 14-Year. But there’s no need for us to bemoan its absence: I have a bottle. Glengoyne is a mellow highlander at its 43-46% ABV typical strength. But it’s a bit of a beast at cask strength. \nThere are many fine cask strength ranges available from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society\, Signatory\, Gordon & MacPhail and\, most recently\, Battlehill. Unlike the other independent bottlers\, Battlehill costs $50 a bottle. While they’re young CS whiskies\, only fully-matured casks are selected. Let’s try BH’s Royal Brackla\, an awesome 5-year-old offering at 58% ABV. Let’s top it off with a lovely dram of Port Charlotte Scottish Barley. \nWe hope that you can join our Black Friday tasting and do bring a friend because “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.” \nWHISKY MENU: \n1. SUMMARY:Whiskey Season Celebration
DESCRIPTION:It’s a Whiskey Season Celebration. \nBy popular demand\, it’s a Bourbon center gala. W.L. Weller is a must sought after wheated Bourbon as its Mashbill substitutes wheat instead of the standard rye grain component. Boone County 1833 is a fine 10-year Bourbon bottled at almost 91-proof. In Chattanooga\, we discovered its top-selling J.W. Kelly Melrose Rye. Our bottle was finished in a former Amarone red wine cask of Spanish red oak. Old Bardstown is a sourced-Bourbon bottled by Willett Distillery. Rumor has it as having been made by Heaven Hill. Who cares? It’s a delicious 101-proofer at only $40 a bottle! Our Knob Creek is a single barrel\, barrel proof Bourbon selected/bottled for Vintage Bottle Shop in Acworth. Now the big find: Stagg Junior which is among the harder to find Buffalo Trace Bourbons. \nMy thanks to Harry at The Juice Box\, Northside Drive\, Sandy Springs. Aged for 12 years in bourbon\, sherry and port casks\, it’s a spicy dram with loads of dried fruit and soft spice. \nBenRiach 10 – The Smoky Twelve A whisky that focuses on the richer side of BenRiach’s spirit\, as well as it’s darker smokier side. Aged for 12 years in a combination of bourbon\, sherry and marsala casks\, the peat smoke is complimented by dried fruit and vanilla from the bourbon and sherry casks\, and rich\, sweet fruit from the marsala. \nWalkers Scottish Shortbread Highlanders \nThe World’s Finest Shortbread: Made in the Scottish Highlands\, Walkers Shortbread cookies are made with just 4 natural ingredients: wheat flour\, butter\, sugar & salt.  Our delicious cookies are available various shapes.  Look for our famous Scottish tartan packaging to taste the difference.

SUMMARY:The Connoisseurs Choice
DESCRIPTION:5 Speyside & 1 Islay Single Malts: We’ve got some interesting bottles of 5 Connoisseur Choice expressions from distilleries seldom seen in Georgia. When was the last time you saw a bottle (or heard the name uttered) of Auchroisk\, Balmenach and Inchgower? And although you may have heard of Glenrothes and GlenAllachie\, our 8-year Glenrothes and 14-year GlenAllachie were distilled decades ago. \nThis will also be an ‘explore Speyside’ tasting as they hail from 3 different districts: Central Spey (3)\, Rothes (1) and Livet (1). SUMMARY:Ohishi/Fukano with Chris Uhde - five 1oz samples
DESCRIPTION:6PM PACIFIC  – 7pm MOUNTAIN  –  8PM CENTRAL   –  9PM EASTERN  – five 1oz samples \nWe’ll be going to Japan for this tasting (virtually.)  Fukano and Ohishi came to the US recently with the rising tide of Japanese Whisky popularity.    These distilleries use a different grain\, rice\, but it’s still whisky.  It turns out that our old LA Scotch Club OG\, Chris Uhde\, is America’s point of contact for these bottles as VP of Impex.  Chris will be telling us all about these two distilleries and their curious path to our shelves in America.

SUMMARY:BenRiach - To Peat or NOT To Peat - six 1oz minis
DESCRIPTION:In part one of our two part series\, we will explore the dichotomy of BenRiach:  that which is peated vs. that which is not.  We will be matching up three pairs of bottles which would otherwise be the same if not for the peat. \nWe will also be bidding many of these expressions adieu\, as the BenRiach is rebranding its core range.  We’ll be addressing that in part two. \nWe’ll be led by one of our club favorites\, Rory Glasgow\, through the following matchups: \n\nBenRiach 10 vs BenRiach 10 Curiositas\nBenRiach 21 vs BenRiach 21 Temporis\nBenRiach Cask Strength Batch 2 Unpeated  vs BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 2 Peated\n\nThe question has been asked\, and on October 17th\, we will finally know the answer.

SUMMARY:Scotch and Sweets - Glenglassaugh
DESCRIPTION:YOU ARE INVITED to join for a Glenglassaugh virtual tasting featuring 3 top-shelf single malts with Scottish Confection pairings. This MASC event will be led by Amber Aristy\, \nBrown-Forman/Atlanta. Please purchase your tickets ASAP as we only have room for 23 participants. No worries; there will be BenRiach and GlenDronach events in November and December 2020. Our September tasting was great fun! We hope to see you on Zoom! \nGlenglassaugh Evolution – paired with Scottish Tablet \nThe abundant sweetness and creamy mouthfeel of the tablet offsets the sweetness of the Evolution and produces fresh notes of sea breeze and tropical fruits. This is due to the unusually fruity nature of the spirit and the use of fresh Tennessee whiskey casks that impart notes of ripe banana. \nGlenglassaugh Revival – paired with Salted Caramel \nCreating a silky texture on the palate\, this pairing rounds out the edges of the whisky while producing a wave of creamy caramel and toffee brittle notes that give way to espresso coffee and warming vanilla bean\, with subtle hints of sea air on the finish. \nGlenglassaugh Torfa – paired with Peppermint Chocolate Shortbread \nThe buttery notes of shortbread and subtle mint crunch provide a profound effect when paired with our Torfa. The mint leaf is released in a cooling burst as it highlights the blasts of fresh peat\, supplying strong notes of bonfire smoke and fresh sea air that lead to a soft finish of warming vanilla spice. \n*$10.00 surcharge for USPS shipping to out-of-area purchasers. There were only 2 such instances for September 2020 tasting.

SUMMARY:The Chuck Crouch Birthday tasting
DESCRIPTION:  \nIt’s October; It’s Chuck Crouse’s B-Day: To celebrate his 70th birthday (he’s not  old\, he’s just even par)\, I’ve selected 6 of Chuck’s favorite whiskies. Glencadam is da bomb!  I just love this style of whisky\, because it has a unique taste and interesting complexity.  Glenlivet Triple Cask Matured is just the half step in strength that we seek in the #2 slot.  Here’s a lovely dram that is currently missing from its core line-up:  Arran 14-Year.  But there’s no need for us to bemoan its absence: I have a bottle.  Glengoyne is a mellow highlander in its 43-46% ABV typical strength. Even so\, it is a bit of a beast ‘at source’ (cask strength).  There are so fine cask strength ranges available from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society\, Signatory\, Gordon & MacPhail and\, now\, Battlehill.  Unlike the former listed companies\, Battlehill costs $50 a bottle.  These are young CS whiskies\, but they are of fully-matured casks of young whiskies.  We’re going to try Royal Brackla\, an awesome 5-year-old offering at 58% ABV.  Let’s top this one with a lovely dram of Port Charlotte. I hope that you can join us and do bring a friend because good whisky is made great when shared among friends. \n  \nWHISKY MENU:  Schedule Uber \n\nGLENCADAM Single Malt / ‘Origin 1825’ / NAS / 40% ABV / OB / Dist Owner: Angus Dundee Distillers Plc / Highland (Eastern)\nGLENLIVET Single Malt / ‘Triple Cask Matured’ (Distiller’s Reserve range) / NAS / 40% ABV / OB / Dist Owner: Chivas Brothers Ltd. SUMMARY:GlenDronach and Cheese Zoom Tasting
DESCRIPTION:YOU ARE INVITED to join for a virtual GlenDronach tasting featuring 3 top-shelf single malts with gourmet cheese pairings.  This MASC event will be led by Amber Aristy\, Brown-Forman/Atlanta.  Please purchase your tickets ASAP as we only have room for 23 participants. \nSee you on Zoom! \n  \nThe GlenDronach 12 – paired with – Dubliner Cheese (Ireland) \nSweet\, round and creamy; Oranges\, plums\, walnuts\, chocolate\, sherry\, and soft spice oak. \nA hard\, cow milk cheese that is aged anywhere from 12 months to 2 years. The cheese aims to combine the sharpness of a cheddar with the butter sweetness of Parmigiano. This will lend well to the sweet influence of PX and Oloroso maturation\, and floral flavors of GlenDronach 12. \nGlenDronach Portwood – paired with – Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese (Italy) \nSweet\, round and creamy; Oranges\, plums\, walnuts\, chocolate\, sherry\, and soft spice oak. Protected by European law\, Parmigiano must be made in Emilia-Romagna from milk from the surrounding area of Parma and Reggio. The saltiness of the cheese is the perfect accompaniment to bring out the sweet and nuttiness of the Portwood. \nThe GlenDronach 18 Allardice – paired with – Gorgonzola Cheese \nRichly sherried malt is truly unforgettable with sweet aromatics of fudge and muscovado sugar and a taste of rich\, dark and seductive flavors of sweet fruits and allspice. Gorgonzola is traditionally a rich creamy cheese\, but the blue-green ripples add a sharp spicy flavor that provides an excellent contrast to its richness. The taste ranges from mild to sharp\, depending on age. The smoke and rich flavors really draw out the all spice\, sweet fruits and chocolate that the 18 years of aging in Oloroso casks brings to the whisky \n  \nWHISKY MENU: \n\nGLENDRONACH Single Malt / ‘The Original’ / 12-Year / 43% ABV / OB / Dist Owner: BenRiach Dist Co. SUMMARY:Tour de Écosse - the 3 styles
DESCRIPTION:Pop-over for our Pop-up!  I’ve selected three pairs of complementary whiskies in three different styles for our tasting. We’ll begin with Glen Grant (Speyside) Major’s Reserve\, a prototypical aperitif-style dram.  Macleod’s Highland Regional Single Malt (from its Glengoyne distillery) is my favorite bargain dram at $40. Bladnoch Samsara (11-yr) is a double-distilled Lowlander and Glen Garioch Founder’s Reserve Highlander are\, surprisingly\, of a similar astringent whisky style.  We’ll finish up with Talisker (Islands) and Ardbeg (Islay) for a big finish.  Storm is a bold 45.8% ABV maritime malt whereas our Drum is a Committee Release at 52% ABV (finished in a rum cask called a ‘drum’ aka machine or dump puncheon (500L/132USG) made of thick toasted American oak staves.)  We hope to see you at Maxwell’s Cigar Bar in Woodstock… and do bring a friend as “good whisky is made great when shared among friends.”WHISKY MENU:  6 Single Malts: 1 Lowlands\, 2 Highlands\, 1 Speyside\, I Islands & 1 Islay\n\nGLEN GRANT Single Malt / The Major’s Reserve / NAS / 40% ABV / OB / Dist Owner: Gruppo Campari (Davide Campari-Milano S.p.A.) / Speyside (Rothes)\nMacLEOD’s Single Malt Scotch Whisky / ‘Highland’ / NAS / 43% ABV / IB: Glengoyne Dist / Dist Owner: IMD / Brand Owner: Ian Macleod and Co. SUMMARY:Archives Whisky - five 1oz samples
DESCRIPTION:6:30pm PACIFIC  9:30 EASTERN \nWell\, the attendees at the Munros tasting asked for it\, so you’ll get it.  Archives is the independent label sold by the large whisky ratings site\, Whiskybase.  Whiskybase is in the Netherlands and until now we’ve only gotten Archives bottles shipped directly from overseas.  Looks like they are in America now\, so we are going to give them a spin. \nNOTE: This is ABSOLUTELY NOT a bottle split\, it is an event to attend with friends.  If you cannot attend on zoom\, please do not purchase.
